Expanding on flanneruk's suggestion, you could forego hiking all the way into town and focus on local west London:
- The Heathrow Connect www.heathrowconnect.com leaves Heathrow T123 at 26 and 56 minutes past the hour and takes 15 min to get to Southall and 20 min to get to Ealing Broadway.
- You can use the TimeOut London restaurant guide www.timeout.com/london/restaurants to search for restaurants in these areas and each entry has a map so you can easily see distance from the train stations to restaurant.

It wouldn't give you the classic tourist London experience, but that's not necesarily a bad thing?

Loves2sing: Wow - shorts, tank AND white sneakers? That's just plain crazy! You certainly will never be allowed back to London so enjoy it while you can! I think they actually mark that on your US Passport now if I remember correctly! LOL!

We were in Greece from 4 Mar til 12 Mar. We atayed in Athens the entire trip and rented a car, walked took the metro & trains.

This was our annual relax after 4th quarter break so it was very layed back. We basically decided to go several weeks before and had absolutely no idea of what we would do when we got there. Typically we use this week to go to Vegas but could not resist the $508 tickets to Athens since we'd never been to Greece. The food was great by the way. Have fun!

I wouldn't advise the French Horn in Sonning, as someone recommended. It's just outside the suburb of Reading, where I live, which I think is too far, personally. Also, Sonning is not that easy to navigate. I haven't been there for many years, but I seem to remember that the view from the dining room is ravishing, the wine excellent, and the food mediocre. It's quite expensive, too. It's possible that the food has improved, but I doubt that the prices have!
