I don't understand how the 2 for 1s for admission to sites works. Since there are 4 of us, I need to figure it out. If we don't buy Oyster or travel cards can we still get the discounts? Can I go to a train station and just get them without buying a ticket?

I have never done it, since I travel solo. But from reading a number of threads here over the years my understanding is that you will need four paper travel cards, bought at an overground rail station. See above for the link for prices. You do not have to buy an actual train ticket, but you do need to be in the overground, not the underground, area of the station. You print the vouchers at home for any offers you think you might need. In your case, presumably, two vouchers for each attraction.
You need to check on whether the two girls count as adults, and what affect that has.

Oysters are not relevant to the 2for1's -- it must be a paper travel ticket instead.
No you don't get the discounts unless you have a paper tickets. And you do not buy entrance to an attraction at the station. You go to say the Tower of London, show them your voucher and your paper travel tickets and they will let two of you in for the price of one.

>>JJ - perhaps it would be helpful if you could explain what you mean by paper tickets - do you need to buy, in the case of the OP<<
just for clarification, my last response wasn't for the OP -- it was to Marija's question.
thursdaysd sort of explained what we are talking about.
But in any case both the OP and Marija will need something -- Oysters (purcheased in a tube station) if they don't want to use the 2for1's, paper travelcards (purchased in a train station) if they do want the 2for1 discounts.
Either one works for traveling around London on the buses, tube, local trains, and the DLR.

So, if I'm reading that link correctly, if you want a seven day travel card you have to buy if from a National Rail station, not a London overground station? I was confusing the two. And for a one day travel card you don't need a photo, so the OP might not need photos after all.
