London in March with kids
 

We are planning a trip to London in March with girls aged 12 and 15. Any suggestions on what to do? What is the weather like?

What do they like to do? If you'd like shopping, see previous posts. Weather - 60s, think long sleeved t-shirt, jeans, that sort of thing, and a cotton blouson jacket.

I posted this restaurant suggestion on another thread. Like I said then: "Yes, I know it isn't traditionally British, but neither is McDonalds aand I see plenty of people eating there!" LOL!

There are a few in the USA, but not many. I thought the food was pretty good, but the atmosphere and fun can not be beat. It is great for kids (or the big kids at heart) - I haven't been since 1997 (when I was 24 and not at all embarrassed to get a table for 1) but I don't think it has changed much. I still hear people talking about it (mostly good - some bad ... but that is to be expected of all places)

Take them tp Camden Market. Very bohemian shopping in a huge flea market atmosphere. Get tickets to the London Eye. Harrods, but just for a look.

Odds are the weather won't be wonderful, but who goes to London for the weather anyhow?

Seriously, you're right to plan some foul-weather activities...if the weather turns nice, so much the better.

Some suggestions:

Science Museum--if your girls have any interest in science or enjoy hands-on, interactive exhibits, London has one of the best science museums anywhere.

Brass rubbings--on a rainy day, making a brass rubbing in the crypt of St. Martins-in-the-Field church is a good bet (there's another brass rubbing center at All Hallows-by-the-Tower Church, near the Tower of London).

Museum of London--the subject of the museum is London itself, displaying archeological finds and the history of the city.

Other museums--yeah, kids sometimes have real limited patience for museums...but the British Museum, at least in small doses, is always worth a visit. If fashion and design appeals to your girls, the Victoria and Albert Museum may be worthwhile (otherwise, it won't be). The Natural History Museum is also a good choice, if the subject matter is of interest.

Royal Mews--the stables of Buckingham Palace are open starting on March 27...worth a visit for any young equestrian.

Theatre--London has a huge selection of theatre, including some things that will appeal to young teens. "We Will Rock You" is the Queen musical, the stage version of "Mary Poppins" opens in December...

The Rainforest Cafe????

Thanks for all your advice. The kids are indifferent about going - they want to go south. But, we have free accomodation in London so we have to take advantage. I know that we'll find lots to do.
