London in August

My husband and I plan to visit London, Scotland and possibly France in mid-August 2006. We would like some advise on "must-sees" and the weather during that time as well as suggested length of trip.

Hi mt,

You might wish to start by looking up your destinations under "destinations".

You might also wish to get a few guide books out of the library.

After you have a draft itinerary, we will be glad to help you improve it.

I don't want to answer with
"Well, I wouldn't start from here", but must you really come in mid-August?

I think that the Scottish schools go back some time in August and so it may not be so bad up there.
However, London is dreadful in August.
It's crowded and if it's hot the tube is sweltering.
Mid-September would be much better.

I guess at this time we are deciding the best time to travel to Europe. Our options are July, August or September. We do not have to travel in mid-August.

If those are your choices then either go in early July or September. Avoid late July/August if you can. September would be great.

As for the rest of your questions -- there are hundreds of threads on here giving all sort of advice/suggestions. Start w/ "Destinations", then read some of the other info already on here.

"Musts" are different for everybody.

What sorts of things do you enjoy? How long is the trip? Give us something to work w/ and we can help a lot.

(If your trip is less than 3 weeks you shouldn't try to squeeze in London and Scotland and France. Pick one or two)

Go to Edinburgh during the festival.

I've been to London in June, July, August, September, December, and January. August 2005 was just as good as any other time, so far as I can tell. We didn't notice London being terribly crowded, nor was it too hot, although on that trip we didn't visit many top tourist attractions, and it was also about six weeks after the terrorist attack on the tube. That said, I really did enjoy a September trip, and found that the main tourist sights were not overcrowded.
