London in April or June-July?
Hi
I am planning a trip to London in 2009, I'll b staying with my cousin and her husband. The goal of the trip is shopping and culture (particularly theatre). I'll be spending most of my mornings and afternoons alone and evenings and nights with the family. Is it better for me, given that I'll be using a combination of public transport and taxis, to go in April or in June-July.

In YOUR situation, I don't think it makes a huge difference.
April: fewer tourists, but weather can be still cold, shorter daylight
June/July: packed with tourists, better weather, long daylight hours
If I were you, I'd check 2 things:
1) Are there sales during April and/or June, July
2) Are there particular shows you want to see, or are there particular actors & actresses you want to see? I would look at what shows will be on during those time periods and choose which month based on that.

yk, you hit the nail right on the deal. On the one hand, sales are in the summer and so July would economically make more sense. On the other hand, I would love to watch James Mcavoy in Three Days of Rain which closes in May.
So that's why I am undecided.

lol- considering the pound is at $1.4, you can say that the clothes are already "on sale" at a 30% off compared to May 2008 when the pound was at $2.
Which is more "precious" to you? Getting something on sale, or seeing a special West End show which you can't see once it closes, no matter how much money you're willing to pay in July?

Unless a show that closes before summer is something you cannot go without, I'd definitely come during the summer. Weather is so much better, and longer days. You can freeze in April. Although this week is really quite nice, so you never know!

Avoid Easter as the schools have a two week break so London will be busier then.
I'd go see James McAvoy if you can get tickets but if not then June before the school summer break would be better.

Hi all, thanks so much for all the advice. I don't really care about the sales because as yk pointed out the pound is already weak and I guess that many stores will have discounted items throughout 2009 to encourage spending under the current economic conditions. I was in London last October for only a couple of days and the weather, which I think is similar to the weather in April, didn't bother me. I do hate crowds and I really want to see James Mcavoy who I think is the best actor around. I wonder, though, if the Spring/summer lines hit the stores by April as I live in Dubai where the weather is warm year round.

If you want to see Judi Dench in Madame de Sade -- it would have to be April since it is a short run March through May. The tickets are selling fast but if you want a single you can probably still get something good.
Otherwise - really doesn't make that much difference. The big European (including the UK) crowds don't really start until mid July-ish due to school summer breaks.
You won't see that much difference in the crowds between April and June.
Daylight hours will be longer in June (very VERY long) - but for a city trip I wouldn't decide based on that.
