We were visiting London today. We all wore shorts We spent 4 hours at the very cool British Library and 2 1/2 hours at the cool enough movie theatre. The 1 hour on the tube at 6 pm was torturously hot, especially when the train stopped in the tunnel for a few minutes.

Well, it was 118/48 here today. That 100F in London sounds pretty good. Weather officials were advising people to stay inside if possible.

I'm very glad I arranged to be in England in September this year. I don't mind missing out on this heat wave! Meanwhile, here in Portland, we're hitting 100 F for a couple of days as well. So much for those spots in the world where it rains "all the time"!

i was out this morning in london and the only people not wearing shorts and flip flops were the europhile american tourists (and maybe a few newbies misled by the europhiles).
they did look oh so european however. i stopped to ask a few of them for directions just to make them feel good about looking so european.

As a nation, we Brits seem to be completely caught out when unusual thins happen - for example Heat in summer, cold in Winter.
Other Countries can get by in Temperatures of 40C in Summer, -30 in Winter with little problem, but here, it is Chaos if temps get above 30C (Trains reduced to 10mph to prevet buckling of rails) or if we get 3 inches of snow.
I think it boils down to a mentality of being cheaper to clear up the resulting mess, than to have to spend money preparing for it.

Sitcky and warm today. Heard some thunder around 7 am, but no rain.
Yesterday, I went into Maidenhead to get a new coffee maker. I walked into the main appliance store just off High Street. Before I even had a chance to open my mouth, the weary staff looked up and one of them said, "if you want an air conditioner or fan, we're sold out. And we won't have any more until the end of next week."
They were relieved I was merely hunting a Krups coffee maker and Miele vaccuum cleaner bags. But while they were bagging up my stuff, three people came in searching for fans or AC units.

Since the hot weather is here to stay, eventually all of Europe will be forced to adapt to it. The problem is that the temperature is rising very quickly (Paris is 30° warmer than it was a decade ago), and it takes time for infrastructure to adapt.
It also takes time to snap stupid Europeans out of their superstitions and ignorance concerning hot weather.
Passing out bottles of water in the TFL won't help much. That only works if you can sweat and if the sweat can evaporate, which is not possible when there is 90% humidity and no breeze. You have to air-condition under such conditions.

I was at a flower show yesterday and it was really hot.
There were very few pairs of shorts around apart from those on a few men.
Almost all the women were wearing light swirling skirts which caught any breeze going.
They all looked quite elegant and cool (including me, I hope).
Most men, including Canon Chasuble were wearing lightweight trousers and sandals (without socks).

European men believe that if they wear shorts in the city they will wake up homosexual the next morning. That's why they tend to wear trousers no matter how hot it gets. Maybe that counts as yet another European hot-weather superstition.

I was there in the second week. Didn't get too hot and there was a couple of overcast days. Tube and buses were okay.
Noticed London women dressed like women in California in the summer.
That was compensation enough for the warm weather.
