London Hotels - Near Theaters
We are planning a short family trip (2 adults, 2 teens) to London this December. We would travel right after Christmas and be back around New Years Eve. We have all visited London before, so this is just a short trip to visit favorite museums and see a few shows. In the past we stayed at Scala House, but this time we would prefer a hotel (not an apartment). We like being close the the Covent Garden area so that we can walk home from the theater after the shows. Since we need 2 rooms we are looking for a moderately priced hotel; something in the area of $160 or so per room. Any suggestions? Thanks, Susan

Susan,
You'll never be near all theaters no matter where you stay, but I would say in a moderate price range the Strand Palace, Thistle Charing Cross and St. Giles would be close to some theaters. (we've stayed at Scala House a number of times too). St.Giles is near Leicester Sq. & Charing Cross Rd., Strand Palace is on the Strand and the Charing Cross is atop the Charing Cross station. I think there is a Drury Lane Moat House that might work for you too. |
I vote for the Strand Palace. It was nice and comfortable and worth the price to be near Covent Garden, which I loved. They have a huge tourist population staying there and seems very busy, as is the street outside.
If being close to the theatre is a prerequisite for you, the Strand Pace did not disappoint at all. ( Despite the billions of complaints here on Fodors) |
Susan, I posted almost this exact question about a week ago, except that I also wanted to be near good bus lines. Not surprisingly, I got pretty much the same recommendations as you did, with the addition of Thistle Trafalgar Square, which I booked this morning for 115 pounds including tax and breakfast.
I did searches on the others as well. I didn't go with the Strand Palace because everyone said the rooms were really tiny (even more so than usual) and, more important, said there were miles of corridors. I didn't want a long walk after getting back to my hotel (I have a little arthritis in my knees, plus will have my 80-year-old mother with me)! I was a little leary of the St. Giles, mainly because the 25-30 recommendations for it on numerous threads were all from the same person. The Thistle Charing Cross looked great but was more expensive than the Trafalgar. Obviously, I haven't stayed at any of these yet, this is just what I found with my searches. Good luck! |
I booked thistle charing cross for 107 pounds including breakfast and dinner...great rate.

just how far apart are the Thistle Charing Cross and Thistle Trafalgar Square? sounds like they'd be on top of each other...

I just noticed the Kingsway Hall offered at doubles from £116 as a Fall special on the smallandeleganthotels.com site. That is a great price for a very nice 4star in walking distance to many theatres. You might want to look at that hotel also.

Thistle Charing Cross is about 400 metres or yards from Thistle Trafalgar Square. I am afraid I cannot answer your question of just how far it is.
