Skaye, the Rembrandt is located in Brompton Road,Harrods street, at the other end of the street, in front of Victoria and Albert museum. Check its rates and location at hotel-assistdotcom. I made reservations easily and securely through them.

I visit London several times a year, and nearly always get rooms through laterooms.com. I like to be in the Knighstbridge/Chelsea area. Last time I stayed in Myhotel Chelsea, and was very very happy; they had fantastic beds, very friendly staff, nice breakfast. It's quite modern, recently done. The hotel is right behind the Conran Shop, in Brompton Cross; quiet but a great area. Paid 120 pounds. Walking distance to South Kensington Tube.
For about 120 pounds I have also stayed in the Lowndes (very nice too), The Millenium (modern, not very exciting, but a good location on Sloane Street), The Beaufort, Beaufort Gardens (small, English).

Do you always plan your holidays with such a bizarre scheme of "budget"?

I can highly reccommend Claridge's, and The Lanesborough - these range from around 235GBP per night to 400GBP for a standard room.

Surely you have a rough idea of how much you want to spend? If posters just endorse a 1000GBP per night suite will you consider it the norm? Do some of your own research, make your findings known, then allow people to offer substitutes.

Please employ some rationale when booking a hotel.

Don't really want to keep stirring this up - but decent hotels near tube stations could cost anywhere from less than £100 to over £500 per night double. And when you throw in Pirceline, Laterooms or other discount sites, you could have an even wider price range.

Not trying to pick a fight - honest - but no hotel recommendation is useful unless you know what your budget is.

You must have SOME idea how much you want to pay.

I like the Rubens Hotel across from Buckingham Palace and a couple of blocks from Victoria Station. A nice 4* hotel at a reasonable price (check out londontown.com under small, luxury hotels). We are booked there again in May.

Nice staff, great breakfast and good location. They also have air conditioned rooms, something you will probably need in August.

Skaye, perhaps you would get legitimate suggestions were you to mention the hotels you used previously and the reasons for your unhappiness with each. I'd also suggest you say how much you paid but that sounds like it may be a state secret.
