I will be in London in May - on my own - any advice on where to stay ?

Well a hotel is always a good choice, but I suppose you could sleep on a bench at Victoria Station, or perhaps in a sleeping bag in Hyde Park.

Pernhaps you would care to expand a bit on your budget range, type of place you want to stay in (B&B versus hotel), class of establishment (1*, 2*, 3*, 4*, 5* no *), and so forth. Then perhaps we can help you.

If you are in London during the third week of May many tourist and budget hotels may be full due to the Chelsea Garden Show. You should book now.

If you go to google.com and search for 'hotels london' you will find many links. Depending on how long you plan to stay and your budget, you can stay in accomodations ranging from a hostel to a private home to a 4-star hotel.

A friend of mine did the park bench and monastery route about 20 years ago - he doesn't recommend it.

Depends on how much you want to spend, of course. There are some medium priced hotels near Victoria Station on Ebury street. One is the Tophams Belgravia. The Millenium chain has some good locations also. Do a search on this forum and then check websites for prices and availability. Don't wait.

oh sure, some of us peruse these bulletin boards for travel tips. but, i find a secondary benefit -- laughter -- brought on by genuinely funny, sarcastic and sometimes caustic replies to some of these posts. so here's a genuine salute to those fodorites who contribute to our good health through wit and well-chosen words!
