London hotel - which one - help

My husband and I will be in London for a week at the end of the month. I still don't have a hotel booked. With the exchange rate the way it is for the dollar, I want to be pretty confident that I'm going to have a great experience for $300/night and up. This is our first time to London, so we'll inevitably do the touristy things, but don't want to limit ourselves. We'd like to be able to walk easily to some points of interest and be near a tube. We plan on going to the theatre and may want to take advantage of last minute ticket offers. I'd like to be near a garden to enjoy that wonderful London experience. We don't want something starkly modern, and would prefer a bit more character, but we do want a queen bed and a shower. A helpful concierge is always a plus. We'd like to enjoy the excitement of the city, but also relax at the end of the day.
I have quotes for Hazlitt's, Beaufort, Knightsbridge, and I also saw a good rate at the Sheraton Park Lane. I've been using the LondonTown web site, so there are still additional options. I also had a quote from No. 16 and a few others, but I'm not sure what's still available, as it was a few weeks ago when I was hoping to find something a bit less expensive.
Thank you for your help. It seems that for every positive rating I see for a spot, there are several others that report terrible experiences. I'm inviting that again, I suppose, but I welcome your suggestions, both for individual properties and area.

I've stayed at the Beaufort a few times (through laterooms.com); its a nice small hotel, very friendly staff. Location is great, just off Brompton Road around the corner from Harrods, near the South Kensington Museums. There's a lounge on the ground floor where you can help yourself to drinks, tea. Make sure they give you a queen bed; I once refused a room that they said was a double, where the bed was far too small (one and a half single in my view).
The Knightsbridge is on the same square; looks more modern in decor. I haven't stayed there, but it looks very nice.
I like to stay in either Knightsbridge or Chelsea, since I used to live nearby and know these areas well. I usually book through Laterooms; other good deals I've had through them were at the Lowndes, and at My Hotel Chelsea, both of which I can recommend too.

I've stayed at Hazlitt's, it's pretty much the way it's described in the various tour books, old building & period furnishings, sort of what you'd picture London was like a couple of 100 years ago, you step back in time the minute you walk in.

The rooms really vary in size, so if a small room is a problem for you, be sure to ask which rooms are available. The staff was very friendly & helpful.

It's right in the middle of Soho, close to tube & theaters, and a nice little park (Soho Square?) is a half block away.

It's definitely in the thick of things and the only downside is it isn't exactly in a quiet area, there's a lot of night life in Soho.

We went to Priceline and bid for a 4* in the Soho Mayfield (theater) district. We ended up getting the Waldorf Hilton for $115 USD. It is very nice, nice and helpful doorman and concierge and right in the middle of touristy things.

You are on Auldwich just about two blocks from Covent Garden and within a stone's throw of a dozen or more theaters. It is an easy walk to Leichester Square where you can check TKTS for 1/2 price day-of-performance tickets. Busses and Tube stops are very convenient.

ALL of your {"requirements" will be more than adequately met to include the $300 a night and up at the Covent Garden Hotel..near poiints of interest and the tube, excellent concierge services, large and very well-decorated rooms, plenty of character and charm, granite and mahogany baths with a separate shower, walking distance to theatres, etc.,..Pricey, most definitely. Worth it?..absolutely IMO.
