London hotel/area trip recs

I get SO ANNOYED with these posts when people ask for help planning trips to NYC. Guess I should eat my words.

I am planning a trip to London at some indeterminate time in the future for one week to research at the British Library. I haven't been to the UK in 20 years. I don't need to stay nearby, but someplace accessible. The last time, we stayed at the Russell Hotel and I thought it quite suitable. Anyway, I've looked a little at prices and so forth, and I don't even know where to start. Namely because, off the top of my head, there isn't anything pressing I want to do while I'm there except go to the library.

The budget is $225 USD a night. Can anyone recommend how I should start thinking about this? Thanks.

For $225/£175 a night I'd look at one of the several Premier Inns and Travelodges in the general Kings Cross/St Pancras/Euston/Russel Square area. Premier Inn are pricier than Travelodge but both should be well within your budget (though rates are VERY date specific)

I'd avoid Travel lodges, I might add in Ibis (they do a good cheap breakfast) and Premier is still my favorite

I generally avoid Travelodges too, but here are several new ones in London that are nicer than most run of the mill Travelodges. Still basic, but clean and modern. Yes, Ibis would be a good option.

I suggest you start right here, on this web page. Go to the Destinations menu at the top. Click to find London, with lots of current information and suggestions.
For public transit, https://tfl.gov.uk/ It will plan your routes. Google Maps has a similar function and will show hotels, pubs and restaurants near where you want to stay.,

Rathbone Hotel could be in budget depending on the travel dates, great location, especially in the evenings, close to many restaurants in Charlotte Street.

Grafton Hotel is another possibility, again, depending on dates as the rates vary greatly.

Most times of the year the cheapest rooms/ prepaid/ non- refundable at the rathbone might just fit in he budget.

I'd suggest start thinking in pounds, not US$. We stayed at Studios2Let in Cartwright Gardens, Bloomsbury area earlier this year, it's within a five to ten minute walk of the British Library. We loved the location, it's close to a big Waitrose supermarket, tube is nearby, Kings Cross/St Pancras 10 mins walk, cafes etc. The studios vary in size and are fairly basic. We had a double bed, private bathroom and small kitchen which is very handy if you've been out all day and just want to heat some soup for dinner.

As far as other things in London, what do you enjoy? Museums, theatre, shopping, gardens, history, guided walks?
