London hotel -- priceline, but where?
I need to book a hotel or a B&B in London for a weekend in July. All I'm looking for is someplace clean where they won't rob us blind while we sleep, and won't charge us an arm and a leg to do so. I've heard that priceline is great for London hotels, but I'm not familiar enough with the geography to determine which area to bid for. We won't have time to do much more than the normal sights, but I know a great many of them are rather spread out. Is there an area that's the most centrally accessible by public transit, if not the most centrally located?
Although, on the other hand, if anyone happens to have a place that they love for around 50euros a night (is that even possible?!)I'd love to hear about it!
Many thanks,
Heather

How many of you are there trying to stay in this room that will cost $50? How far are you willing to travel from the center? Assume you are willing to go for a shared bath?
Have you considered hostels (but even then I don't know what $50 will get you since they charge for each half of the bunkbeds in group rooms).

All in all the best zones to bid in London are either Westminster, or Mayfair-Soho. All of the other zones have good to great properties - but there also are some in less good areas. I would be happy w/ the location of any of the known P-L hotels in Westminster and Mayfair-Soho
Be sure to check biddingfortravel.com before bidding
a €50 double will be tough even in a hostel or using Priceline.

I bid the Kensington area and got the Millenium... I was very happy.
What I would do is go to biddingfortravel.com read the hotels they report getting in each zone... look over the prices and IF you can live with ANY of the hotels in a zone bid away...

I got the 4* Thistle Marble Arch for $60/night plus taxes and fees = $72. I was very happy with this hotel and I felt very safe in that area. It's also quite near the Marble Arch tube. For priceline purposes, it's in the Bloomsbury area.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I had a feeling $50 would be wishful thinking! Or even 50 euros, for that matter.
In answer to your questions, it will be just myself and my boyfriend. We would prefer a private bath, but it's not necessary. We are both very comfortable taking public transit, but since we only have several days would prefer not to have to spend *all* of our time on the train!
janisj, thanks for the direction -- it's a good place for me to start!
Many thanks,
Heather
