We went from Ancona to Split last summer via the Croatian ferry. We stayed at the Bellevue which was a great location but a little bit run down in terms of the bathroom. Also there was no air conditioning and it was VERY hot in the room. On another trip, my husband stayed at Hotel Split and liked it very much.

Try this site:

http://www.dalmacija.net/split.htm

Also take a day trip to Trogir and try to go to the island of Brac for the day or over night. They have hydrofoils running from Split to Brac and Hvar and its well worth the trip! I think both are less than one hour.

http://www.dalmatia-mid.com/hotels.htm

http://members.home.nl/iwi/BRAC.htm

We used the Lonely Planet guide to Croatia to help plan and the restaurant recommendations were good also.
