London help needed: Globe Theatre dining?
We are happy to have tickets to see Romeo and Juliet at the Globe for our May visit, and were planning to have dinner at the theatre restaurant before the play. Any comments about the restaurant? I have eaten there before, seem to recall it being pretty expensive even with a better US/UK exchange rate (is it worth the expense?)
I visited the Globe's web site and find they have a pre-play talk starting at 6, ending 15 minutes before the play starts. Hmm, if the restaurant doesn't open till 5:30, that won't work. Any suggestions, Fodorites? A helpful intern at the Globe emailed me to suggest www.southbanklondon.com as a resource, and there are just too many options there to evaluate sight unseen. Any comments on Bankside Restaurant?
And if we spend the afternoon pre-Globe on South Bank, is Vinopolis worth a visit?
Thanks for any help. Our stay in London will be short, so we want to make the best of it!

SB,
I can't comment on the theatre restaurant but let me make a suggestion. The Tate Modern, which is almost right next to the Globe, has a great restaurant on the top floor called Cafe 7. The food is terrific and the prices are reasonable (for London). They also have a creative wine list with moderate prices as well. Views are spectacular.
Menus are available on the website.

Thanks, JoeG and Kate, for a terrific suggestion. We haven't been to the Tate Modern yet, so that might be our afternoon right there.
Omigosh, I looked at the restaurant menu and want to go over for dessert, right NOW! (For curious readers, here's the web site:

We've never done the wine tour at Vinopolis but have had lumch there several times and shopped the wine shop for accessories. Very good food, reasonably price and a big selection of wine by the glass.

You have tons of choices. There are two restaurants in the Globe. The posh one and a less expensive cafe w/ good food.
Therer are also two restaurants in teh Tate Modern. OXO Tower has an expensive restaurant and an expensive-ish brasserie, The Anchor pub - but this might be a problem if you want to attend the lecture. Also the Blueprint cafe and several other southbank restaurants are w/i walking distance.

Thanks, London gurus, for the helpful information.
So many options -- and it's evident that South Bank is very different from the place it used to be way back when I lived in London. We look forward to exploring a bit.

I ate at The Globe Theatre restaurant several years ago and it was fine. It was convenient and, as I recall, the food was pretty good too. I know I did not order wine. I never do that if I am going to the theater afterwards.
