I received another reply from another hotel but can't figure out from their website if this is a good location or out of the way
The price I received for this hotel is £120 per night inclusive of VAT for a family room www.phoenixhotel.co.uk, which seems to be about 50% off the tariffs listed on their site How about location of this one www.avonmorehotel.co.uk £112 including tax and breakfast Thanks to everyone with your generous help |
Le Meridien is very close to Picadilly Circus and the street in front is always VERY busy, sometimes quite noisy, but on the other hand, it's very easy to catch a Tube or bus to anywhere you want to go. Last time I looked, there was scaffolding in front of Le Meridien (as I remember). The public rooms are not particularly impressive. I think there are nice Meridiens around, but the hotel is fine.
Your rates don't sound too bad for that area, but keep checking. You might be able to get rates just as good at other hotels. If you can find a similar rate for the Sofitel St. James foryour dates, take it...IMO, it's a nicer hotel than any of those on your list. |
Thanks BTilke
I looked at the Sofitel and really liked the hotel but their rooms do not sleep more then 3 to one room and getting two rooms would make it more then what we would be willing to spend |
Thanks BTilke
I looked at the Sofitel and really liked the hotel but their rooms do not sleep more then 3 to one room and getting two rooms would make it more then what we would be willing to spend. I found that a lot of the hotels we really liked and were in our price range fell into the 3 person max per room, like the Sofitel, Sheraton Park Lane also had a good rate but again only 3 people to the room |
Of the two hotels you most recenely mentioned, the Phoenix is in Bayswater (north of Hyde Park) and the Avonmore is in Earl's Court (west of Kensington). Both areas are full of tourist class hotels and are convenient by tube or bus to most of the main sights. Other areas are more central however (Victoria, Bloomsbury, Mayfair, Piccadilly Circus) and if it were me, I'd keep looking.
My (limited) experience with quad or family rooms at tourist class hotels is that the rooms snugly fit 4 beds and not much else. As mentioned you can get a flat in a more central location. A little breathing room at the end of a long touring day is a really good thing! Someone mentioned Scala House apartments to you on another thread and it's right in your price range. The location is excellent. The owner is usually quite fast in responding. Also, have you considered the Premier Travel Inn County Hall? It's in an unbeatable location next to the London Eye and a bargain for a family at £92 a night. |
Ga9497, if you search londontown.com again, look for the heading: "Request Booking" for Bed and Breakfasts, Boutique Hotels, and Apartments.
On the next page, you will be able to specify "Budget Small Hotels/B&Bs, Luxury Small Hotels, or Apartments". Also you can specify a quad room. I did a search for 7 nights, a quad room, starting March 27, 2007. About 15 choices came up, described as Budget Small Hotels/B&Bs. (I think your first search was under "Real Time Booking", which turned up just the one hotel.) We rented the Hyde Park Radnor for our family of four last summer, through londontown.com. It was a very nice location for us, between Paddington and Hyde Park. A nice little hotel, very clean and charming with a nice hot breakfast, but our quad room and bathroom were way too small for more than our three-night stay. I wouldn't recommend it for you to stay 7 nights. Also, londontown is very responsive via e-mail if you have questions. Good luck! You are smart to start so early. It's not easy to find nice quad rooms, as I have discovered, tool |
Maureen
Thank you for taking the time to explain that it worked great now |
ga9497, you misunderstood my question. I was asking if Mkingdom2, a frequent contributor who lives in London, had given his opinion on the relative merits of each hotel. He seems to know many of them very well--not only location, but in terms of decor, staff, reputation, etc.

Just an FYI on these apartments that have been recommended www.eandeapartments.co.uk
This is the email that I have received from them about my inquiry of availablity at the end of March into April 2007 "I am sorry to have to tell you that we will be packing up the business at the end of March 2007. Therefore we are unable tol help with accommodation for your family of 4 from the 29th March for 7 nights. However, as we will be fully operational until then I am attaching a copy of our Price List/Prospectus in case we can be of any assistance between now and then." |
Honey I live in London and travel worldwide with teen kids .What exactly do you want from your hotel ..let me know as much detail as possible and I can give you a very educated guess.Vicarage gate is beautiful and very central without the nasty tourist issues..Victoria is a big bus station area -dont go there and Picadilly is just too busy and hectic and hellish to rest after a days trawl..anywhere in Kensington is good because its central beautiful parks and near enough to walk to the tourist hilights.Let me know your specifics and I will help...

Hi Maggie
Thank you for the offer. Here is what I am looking for *Price - not over £150 per night *Room size - something that will accommodate the 4 of us in one room at a hotel since two rooms will be more then this *Location- something that isn't going to take us an extremely long time to get to most sights. One example, it seems that Earls Court area and anything near Regent park is a little out of the way unless I am looking at it incorrectly *Room itself - ensuite bathroom, have some kind of niceness to it, basically something more then just a "basic room" We aren't the type of people that go with the thought "the room is just a place to sleep and as long as it clean that is fine" Here is one that I think is just too basic for us, as an example, http://www.fairways-hotel.co.uk/ One that I think is nice looking http://www.avonmorehotel.fsnet.co.uk/rooms.htm Flats are a consideration also but the ones that have contacted me so far aren't any less then the hotel prices I have seen and so far they all want payment at least 60 days prior to arrival with no refund if cancelled. Not that we are planning on cancelling but you never know what life will throw at you |
Forgot to add that the reason we are trying to keep it at £150 per night or less is because with the exchange rate this amount will equal $277.44. We are trying to keep it under $300 per night

Oh - that is too bad about e&e - they have such good deals in Pimlico.
The Avonmore looks nice but is is awfully far west beyond Warwick Rd/Earls Court near West Kensington tube. It is only on the District tube line and a long way from most any place you would be touring. Just not that convenient a location - but if you got a very good deal, then it might be worth it. Just one teensy suggestion: There are a lot of posters w/ a LOT of specific knowledge. Sometimes it is a good idea to check on what other posts/advice someone has given - just to see if it has been helpful or not. Click on their name to get a posting history. |
Janis - thank you. I figure that out the other day and have tried it as I have time. I am also just doing a basic search on this site for London and just going back through the posts too, this is time consuming but I figure it will be all worth it plus I have plenty of time to go through the posts before my vacation.
I am sure I will have other questions and I appreciate everyone's patience since it seems many questions have been asked over and over again |
Have you checked the Marriott County Hall? It repeatedly comes up as a hotel with rooms that can sleep 4, and a bit more reasonable than my favorite Holiday Inn Mayfair (which does come in under your budget). The Marriott is on the South Bank near the Eye, which really is a great location.

Hi ga9497,
With the exception of the bath and the kitchen, yes, everything is in one room. You can see the floor plan at https://www.astons-apartments.com/ac...ation_info.htm then click on the link under the picture. The best thing I liked about Aston's was location, very convenient to most everything, and the neighborhood was very nice. Hope this helps. |
I would avoin Earls court cromwell road and certainly alot of west Ken.They are really tourist traps. The county Hall area is good.I have high expections from hotels myself -bit of luxury is nice and a good bar-breakout area for room sharers.Marble Arch area quite good.I think the Hilton Metropole is in a very London area mainly middle eastern area-very safe -and wonderful coffee shops and eating area for something different but dont concern yourself with international issues.Good for going to see London and an interesting area.I will spend a few minutes looking at a few prices and get the best looking spots I would stay in.I like a good deal but I expect a bit of holiday luxury!
