DEFINATELY for authentic English food you must go to Porters. I am not positive, but I think it may have been in convent garden. It is owned by an Earl and is near the theater district. The food is excellent! You can find Porters on the internet to check out the menu ahead of time - there is even a coupon to print out!

Rules in the theatre area is famous for classic English food. Do not miss their sticky toffee pudding.

My husband who's English like Geales for fish and chips but others here prefer the Seashell (I think that's the name). If you do a text search here for Fish AND London you'll see lots of posts.
Baked beans on toast (beans on toast) is exactly what it sounds like. My husband likes it for breakfast!

It is just what it says; Heinz baked beans from a can on toast. For a proper English experience, it should be served cold.

If your hotel is serving a full English breakfast it will probably be part of the offering.

English food has improved somewhat. Tikki Masala is more popular than fish and chips.

English food is not good. It is not tasty. Foreign foods are more popular there except for English treat Mars Bars

Forgive Hirochei for he knows not what he says. Has he never tried roast beef and yorkshire pudding, or stayed in an english B & B and looked forward to the bacon and egg start to the day.
One of the joys of travelling, to sample the local dishes.

Hirochei is a recurring troll who likes to make inaccurate blanket statements.

London food is excellent, except when it's not. Ditto New York food, Paris food, and Rome food.
I wouldn't judge London food by old fashioned favorites like cold beans on toast, any more than I would judge American food by pork rinds or canned tomato soup (which I like, by the way).

websites like
timeout.com
squaremeal.com
London restaurant rants and raves here at fodors.com
etc etc can give you lots of dining suggestions

Are you sure Hirochei is a troll? I just ASSumed he was an Asian who has travelled and trying to take part in discussion on this forum. Is he making an A** out of me?

From Some recent articles on Times and Telegraph,it seems Rules is getting too touristy, losing its touch on Traditional food. Perhaps Simpson in the Strrand would be better.

No - Hirochi is a regular contributor (I assume he is Asian).

HIROCHEI is a nasty Troll who probably wants people to think he is Hirochi. He has been popping up a lot the last few days trying to copy Hirochi's syntax - but it is no where near similar.

For a non-tourist fish and chipper try the ‘Traditional Place’ on Leather Lane. It is full of local market traders and business people. Leather Lane runs parallel with Hatten Garden, which is the diamond district of London and an excellent window shopping opportunity. If you want more of a choice then round the corner on Greville Street EC1 the ‘Bleeding Heart’ is an excellent ‘gastro pub’.

Lots of places are excellent for fish and chips. Where are you staying? I may be able to offer a recommendation nearbye.

And beans on toast is what stops single men and students from starving to death (and kebabs too, with beer being the remaining food group). AND THEY ARE NOT COLD!!!

I like to put vindaloo curry paste in them. The gastric impact of this can only be hinted at on a family website.

YUK!!!!! Who told you beans on toast is served cold - are you nuts? just kidding.... Try cheesy beans on toast...mmm... toast topped with grilled cheese then HOT baked beans... real comfort food. David is right - this is a typical student-type dish, quick to rustle up and a standing joke for english men to say "I serve great beans on toast"... doh...
