I don't really know what is considered real fish & chips. However, during our visit to London last year, we were given one whole fried fileted fish that was as wide as a plate. It's not like fish & chips in America-just small chopped pieces of fried fish.

So we were impressed because those fishes were rather large. And this was the same for every fish & chips order.

Yeah, Mary has the right idea. Just had f & c there in May. It's great!!!!

Fish and chips are the english equivalent of Mcdonalds...do you eat at McD"s at home..if so enjoy...if not england has the very best new menus in EU! Try it you may like it ...I really prefer Uk now to France!

veeolette, isn't that place just incredible!! I loved it! I can't thank Ben Haines enough!!!!!! :)

Huge portions (could NOT eat it all) of F&C fried in a deep vat for about $3USD. Worth the short trek from Victoria's Station. Mmmmmmm...

Actually, we were lucky and happened to be staying straight up the street. Have you tried Goya the spanish restaurant on the corner? Try it next time - amazing!
|
No, I haven't but thank you for the tip!! Good tapas??
|
>Fish and chips are the english >equivalent of Mcdonalds...

Sorry, that's just not true. It's a much healthier meal. For a start as somebody said, you get a real fish battered and freshly fried. The chips are thickly cut unlike french fries and so have far more potato than fat.

Mary and Veollette: Glad to be of service still -- three years after writing.

Veollette: Next time I am near Victoria I shall be there. I do like a good tapas restaurant (There's one in Canterbury, along the road from the gate of Kings College there, and a fine Portugese one at the Vasco da Gama pub on old South Lambeth Road, a short bus strip over the river from the Tate Britain.)

Ben Haines
Ben Haines, you are much adored and appreciated by me!! : )

I would still love to while away an afternoon's tea with you at Brown's someday (my treat). Would love to hear of your travels, particularly those in eastern Europe.

Thank you!!!

Ummm, make that Thistle Charing Cross Hotel, okay, Mr. Haines?? : )

I have often seen fish and chips written as 'London or London style fish and chips.' Please note fish and chips are available throughout the whole of UK, not just London. Look for a busy fish n chip shop, with a long queue of local people, thats where the crispest nicest ones will be.

Egg is right. In the North we still use chip-chopping machines. I should know as a student I used to work at Harry Ramsden's Leeds, and had to shovel two tonnes of spuds in to one every Saturday! If any one is ever in Leeds, then I can recommend Harry Ramsden's in Guisley, and Brians in Headingley for world famous F&C.

You can tell if you have pukka chips, not bogus frozen ones, because the real ones don't go mushy and dissolve when you add the vinegar.

Also the best chips are cooked in lard, not vegetable oil.

The Rock & Sole place located about 10 minutes wlk from the Covent Garden Hotel (don't remember direction). Been in continuous operation for 120 years and only 4 owners. The cod fish and chips were to die for!

The Rock and Sole Plaice is in Endell St, Near St Giles Circus.
