London fireworks November 5
 

It looks on the websites that London has fireworks all over the city on November 5,
Guy Fawkes Night.

Where would be the best place to view?
I will be staying at a hotel near the London Eye.

Also, any information of which tube for fireworks, being some are closed.

Thank you for any info to whose people who love fireworks and those who do not.

Disclaimer: I lived in London 20 (yes, twenty) years ago. At that time there were lots of minor level fireworks all over the city (causing our dog to cower under the bed) but little in the way of large scale (4th of July) shows, of the type that you would travel any distance to see. Maybe that has changed in 20 years? :-)

Apparently Blackheath has fantastic fireworks (take an overland train from London Bridge to Blackheath) they start at 20:00.

Clapham Common also has fireworks - Northern Line.

One time totally by accident I had the best time up top of the London Hilton (the one on Park Lane). Sat having cocktails in the lounge bar w/ fireworks on view at every corner of the horizon.

I wasn't looking for bonfire night festivities because I used to live in the UK and had 'been there, done that' several years.

Are there any places that catch your eye that might be good for safety for women and convenient?

I live in a city where just 1 mile makes the difference between safe and not so safe at night.

I just looked up Blackheath for the fireworks and the August 2011 riots came up. Not good!

I would love a suggestion for a safe place for the Nov. 5 fireworks & bonfire.

Safety shouldn't be an issue at any of the Fireworks displays. But of the list I linked -- absolutely the easiest to reach would be @ Coram's Fields on 4 Nov. It is very near the Russell Square tube station in central London. I have no idea how good/big their display will be.

I am considering Battersea Park.

We can take Victoria to Battersea Park on the Southern Rail.
Hope this is a good choice.

There is a fee to enter, but that is OK.

There will be crowds, but a public display organised by the local authority, as in Battersea Park or on Blackheath, will be managed and controlled for safety of all kinds (that's the point, bearing in mind the various stupidly horrific things that can happen in people's back gardens when they get their hands on fireworks).

Given that it's that time of year again, readers in general might like to take note of the fireworks for the Lord Mayor's Show on 12th November. This is a spectacular show lasting 10-15 minutes from 5pm, launched from the river and best viewed in my opinion from the south bank by Coin St/ Gabriel's Wharf, near the Oxo Tower. Free! Lots of people around and public transport will be crowded, but you don't need any more than the usual cautiousness in crowds.

Betsy you really dont need to worry about safety in Blackheath - its a lovely little village. The riots impacted MANY boroughs in London, there were even some in Notting Hill so dont let that bother you at all - there are not roving gangs rioting in these areas! There will be tonnes of people (many professional people like me that work in the city - Blackheath is a very nice area that has a lovely organic market on Sundays.

In fact hubby and I are planning dinner out with fireworks in Blackheath so maybe we will see some of you there.

As a general information fact--are you aware of the Transport for London website? tfl.gov.uk This is a good place to go to check for up to date (even minute?) info about Tube and other transport information, including line closures and delays; if you have access to the internet while there, this is a site that bears looking at ahead of time to check for potential transport issues that can be planned ahead for.

betsy, I went to the Blackheath fireworks a few years ago when I lived in nearby Greenwich, and they are really good (and free). The heath is usually packed with families so nothing to feel worried about. Getting home was always a nightmare with a huge amount of people swamping the village but you might be OK getting the train back as I imagine most people there wil be locals.

I'd allow at least fifteen minutes from Blackheath station to get up the steep walk uphill from the station to Blackheath itself, and then you'll need to find yourself a good spot. Spectator areas 1 and 2, being further from the funfair, are likely to be quietest, and there are pubs and restaurants nearby if you need a reviver. Trains take about 20 minutes from Charing Cross or Waterloo East mainline stations.

You can also catch the train from London Bridge mainline station if thats more convenient. To avoid the rush of people heading back after the fireworks we are heading to a pub to refresh :)
