London Favorite: The DLR

This February i had the occasion to ride once again London's Docklands Railway and catch one of Europe's most unique and interesting rail journeys.

The DLR is an elevated automated, driverless (in theory at least) train that slices thru one of Europe's largest urban redevelopment projucts in history if not its largest - the historic Docklands, which now sports a forest of tall buildings that form a satellite business city for the City of London

A neat thing about the DLR is that you can sit in the front in the space the driver would ordinarily occupy and get a bird's eye view of the stunning Docklands development of futuristic architected buildings sitting around large pools of water extant from the days when this area were thriving Docklands.

Canary Wharf is the epicentre for the Docklands and here you can get off to see a Docklands Museum (might be a nearby stop is closer, forget?) and explore a vast shopping mall with all the marquee upscale stores.

But be sure to continue on the DLR until it burrows under the Thames and stays in a tube thru Greenwich. Get off at the Cutty Sark station, the heart of historic Greenwich, which to me is one of the most stunning sights in all of London.

Run by TfL, Travelcards and Oyster Cards are valid on the DLR. Catch it from one of two City of London terminals - either at Bank (a hectic station serving several Tube lines i think) or Tower Gateway not far from the Tower of London.

A day out on the DLR, the Docklands and Greenwich is great - and you can even hop a boat from Greenwich back to Charing Cross on the Thames - making an even great day.

At Bank i will wait for the next train if the train standing there for departure has the front seats fill and then position myself to nab those seats on the next train up.

I find that doing the DLR thru Canary Wharf area at night is rather surreal - the water reflecting lights, the buildings lit up, etc.
