London fashion trends

Last time i was in London, i noticed a fashion trend of lots of people wearing New York Yankees baseball caps and New York City borough t-shirts and sweatshirts. I was wondering why this was. Seemed odd to me. They don't play baseball in the U.K. and do they even know who the NY Yankees are?

...erm, yes, we do know who they are. Its like when you see people around the world wearing union jacks (British flag)Take it as a compliment. We know a lot about the USA seeing as most of our TV and movies come from over the pond! we are very genned up on you americans. Just one thing.. please dont call football 'soccer' when in UK!! it grates!! haha.. just a little ole english humour

It's simply like wearing a fashion label, promoted by the likes of Nike et al.

A very similar fashion has been going around for the past couple of yearrs (outside of the UK) of wearing a picture of the Union Jack – I've seen it work throughout Europe and and on Hollywood stars (one of the gals from Sex and the City for instance). Now, this isn't because these people have any particular love or even acquaintance with the UK, but purely because it has become a fashion symbol promoted by the likes of Vivienne Westwood.
