London Eye - sunrise? sunset? queue?
The London Eye website implies that people are waiting in line like fans trying to get McCartney tickets. Does it still have the novelty appeal and long lines 5 years after inception? Is it much better at sunrise or sunset (assuming the weather cooperates)?

Since it doesn't open until 9:30 or 10:30 , depending on the month, you can rule out sunrise!

I rode the London Eye around 10:00 a.m. in March. Just get a clear day if possible. It rains a lot in London. My photos were too dark because of the gray day. I waited 30 minutes which I didn't think was bad.
BTW, I think one of the cars that holds about 20 people should have a glass floor. They could charge more for that one. Now that would freak one out! |
ricktp, we went about 2:00pm on a beautiful sunny day. We actually had reservations but arrived so early we changed our reservation and got in line right then. The line was fairly long but we were impressed how fast it moved. Buy one of the 360 degree pamplets they sell at the ticket counter so you can pick out the various landmarks. Have fun.

In August 2003 and Sep 2004 when i went by several times the lines were minimal - novelty has worn off it seems and those Londoners who have done it probably don't go back so soon. Wouldn't sweat reserving and think half-hour wait typical if any.

I personally think the Eye is best at dusk, so you can see the lights coming up over the city, but also still get a good long view over the city and the nearby monuments. If you are lucky, you may even get a beautiful sunset. I would make a reservation so you are on the wheel for dusk. (Of course, if you are going in the summer, this could be 11 pm!!) Take a look at sunrisesunset.com for twilight timings for when you will be there, and then make a booking accordingly.

There are long queues in summer - it is very popular mainly because it really is very very good.
At this time of year the queues aren't anywhere near as long. I have no idea how long you would have to wait, but based on the queues I've seen when walking past I would hazard a gues at around 30 mins - which is 30 mins well spent. I would also second the recommendation to get the panoramic guide. |
