Would it cost a a noticeable amount more in expenses to travel from this area into London instead of the So. Kensington area. We will spend a lot of our time making day trips out of London.

I should have added in the Excel Center area.

Not hugely more time -- but you'd be a long way from 'places'. You be taking the DLR from Custom House and then have to transfer to the tube or buses to get to almost any sites. I wouldn't stay there unless I had business in the area.

Not a great place to stay in London. You would basically be in an area that consists of a large convention centre and a few bad restaurants that oh along with it and some chain hotels. Absolutely no atmosphere. Nothing is walking distance so you would be reliant on the dlr, which at weekends is frequently closed on that branch due to works for the new crossrail.

Canary wharf is not walking distance and it does have better restaurants but it's like staying in he downtown if some North American city.

Unless you are in town for a convention at the excel I would not recommend staying there.

It will also cost you in time, taking about 20-30 min to get to Bank or Tower Gateway stations and then you need to use the tube to get to where you are going...

I live near Canary Wharf. Excel is, to me, quite a way away and as everyone else says, for the tourist there's not a lot there. You can take the cablecar over to the O2 (whoop-de-do - for about five minutes), look at the Thames Barrier, and that's about it. You could speed things up a little by getting to Canning Town and taking the Jubilee Line into the West End.

But if the alternative is <i>really</i> South Kensington, no contest. Even if it's more likely what a native would call Earl's Court or West Kensington (you need to be careful of what agents and landlords call places - have they told you the postcode or street name?), it's probably better value from your point of view.

I definitely would not stay at Excel - bleak!

I stayed at Canary Wharf a few times when visiting London because I got really good deals on hotel rooms, compared to central London. It was not too bad as there are some quite good restaurants and the Jubilee line is very handy to get into central London.

I would certainly prefer South Ken - one of my favourite places in London. Don't much like Earl's Court. As Patrick says, do you have a postcode?
