London Design Museum?
What do you guys think about the Design Museum? The descriptions I've read of it make it sound kind of interesting, but I'm not sure if it's more abstract that I'm expecting. Any and all opinions about the museum would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Sometimes it is great - other times less so. A lot depends on what temporary exhibits are there at the time. I loved it in the old days when it was on Haymarket.
The current one on the south bank is in some ways even better - more space for art etc. And a good restaurant right there (Blueprint Cafe) and across from the Tower. Not a "must see" for most people on short London visits. But if you have the time is is worth an hour or so. |
"Kind of interesting" describes it perfectly. You'd think it would be a mecca for artists/designers, but IMO it's always a bit thin on content and a little shoddy in execution.

"Kind of interesting" is the most colossal exaggeration.
For most people, the place is in the middle of nowhere for a start, miles away from the nearest tube stations. It's extraordinarily expensive for the pathetic amount of permanent content it's got (if this means anything, think the Tacoma Glass Museum without the live shows and even pricier). The content is the usual self-onsessed trivia of London's design industry: a few phones, a few chairs and the tedious "look how Terence Conran saved us all from dullness" mantra this mob churn out as the answer to everything. In the triumph of hope over experience, I've always left their temporary exhibitions stunned by their dullness and dreadful curating. If you're interested in design, two seconds at the V+A is worth a year at this dump. Even the London Dungeon (qv) is better value and more fun. |
Not worth the entrance fee or the expense and trouble to get there, IMO. And just to top it off, my husband decided tht he did not want to have lunch at the Blueprint Cafe.

Thank you for all your opinions! I think I'll pass given the distance and disappointing content, for the most part.
