This has been debated here before and I don't know what you're looking to do but I really liked Stratford and you can visit two castles in the area.
Hampton Court is a half day trip and Brighton is close as well.
I've always wanted to see Arundel but it's never open when we're in London.
You could do York in a day but it's 2hrs. each way by train so that limits your sightseeing.

I think the best day trip from london is Paris. You can catch an early morning chunnel trail, spend a lovely whirlwind day in Paris then catch a late train back.

I'm going to suggest my hometown - Winchester. It's a hour from waterloo - has the best cathedral around (inside anyway), the great hall, the castle a good museum, lots of pubs and restaurants and you can even go and see where I had my "character built" at the school.

have you heard positives about warwick and cambridge

Cambridge and Oxford are, to me, the most amazing cities. Gorgeous architecture abounds. There are multiple chapels and gardens to explore. Kings College Chapel in Cambridge is a stunning building in a gorgeous setting. And, of course, there are lots of bookstores and restaurants.

Personally, I prefer Oxford to Cambridge. Partly due to Magdalene College and it's lovely grounds which include Addison's Walk and the Deer Park.

I didn't like Warwick Castle. I thought it was too hoakey. But the castle itself is greatly preserved. You can also visit Kenilworth in the area, it's a ruin and completely different than Warwick.

Salisbury and Stonehenge - Salisbury cathedral arguably nicer than Winchester's though that's fab too and Winchester is a neato town

Oxbridge for sure, either one or both

Lincoln is a swell town

Greenwich right in London is a great day trip in itself

Hampton Court - the English Versailles in suburban London

Stratford' a swell town regardless of the hokey Shakespeare stuff

Royal Tunbridge Wells is well swell

Lavenham, a gem of a small town
these are my favorites
