LONDON DAY TRIP

I want to use one of my 5 days in London for a simple day trip that is worth giving up the city for. The only place I've been to is Oxford, which I loved. I'm thinking of Cambridge or Windsor, as interesting cities with train transport. Which is more charming & interesting, in your opinion?

Oh....we're in our late 60s & live in a college town ourselves. We like interesting cultural tours, lots of photo ops, & local shopping. Traveling next week, it looks like the weather won't be too conducive to punting!.

Bath would be good. Or Windsor/Eton. Or Canterbury and/or Dover. All are easy by train. Cambridge IMO would not be enough of a unique experience from your earlier visit to Oxford.

I totally agree with janisj - If you have been to Oxford, Cambridge is in the same vein. I love both but prefer Oxford.

My vote would be Bath - the Roman Baths in particular are fantastic and if the market is on, sounds like you'll love that! If you do, definitely get the audio guide, it's fantastic!

I agree - either option would be great, and Bath is awesome as well. Also consider Salisbury/Stonehenge.

Check out www.walks.com for ideas. Not saying you have to do a tour with them (although I highly recommend them) but they have good descriptions of all the options and use the trains for their main transport. Reading through these might help you decide.

Enjoy your trip!

All above suggestions are great.

After Oxford, my favorite day trip has been to Dover to see the castle AND we had lovely days twice to walk along the clifftops for a bit. But if weather is not looking too good, then Dover for the castle and then stop back in Canterbury for the Cathedral would be doable in a day.

Almost equal to Dover (with or without Canterbury) is Salisbury with a StonehengeTour via coach/bus-caught-right-outside-train-station.

Bath is incredible--I've been twice but not as a day trip. But it's obviously doable.

I fell in love with Winchester last year, too; again, this was not as a day trip but it would be an easy one.

I would take a day trip to Paris.
