LONDON-bedsit-long term
we are looking for a bedsit in london from nov 2011 for 12 months
we are a couple with a daughter aged 8 we are non smokers we will be working we need accommodation with all bills paid is a weekly budget of £150-200 reasonable which area of london will it be? thank you for tips |
Try rightmove.co.uk to search for rental properties.
I'd imagine most landlords would be reluctant to let a bedsit/studio to a couple with a child. And your budget would probably only be viable for some of the very cheapest areas of London which might not be very nice to live in. |
You could try the areas around Paddington Station and also Bayswater tube. There are a lot of travellers in this area and lots of cheap accommodation. I think some would be real dumps so check them out before paying any money.
Check out http://www.gumtree.com/flats-and-hou...offered/london My brother paid about that amount for a single room with kitchenette and shower, with shared toilet. To have space for beds for all three of you, you will probably need to pay more. We paid about £300 per week for a one bedroom flat in West London, including all bills. Kay |
I have a feeling you may need to double or even more likely triple your budget to find something acceptable and central.
|
For the budget you have, to get something reasonable, you will need to look some way outside London (and then you will have the travel costs of getting into central London - assuming that is where you will be working).
If you can tell us where in London your work is we can maybe make some suggestions of which train/tube lines you should be on and suggest some of the commuter stations along the line. |
Yes -- we definitely need to know where you'll be working. London is huge and being w/i at least a semi-reasonable commute makes a big difference.
I have no current info re bed sits (when I was checking them out was 20+ years ago) -- but I agree w/ the others, your budget seem VERY low for anything that is big enough for three. (My guess - just finding one that allows three would mean going up-market a fair bit) |
I don't know if it will be possible. The Gumtree website as mentioned above by KayF is a very good site for searching, and you need keep looking regularly as anything halfway decent goes quickly. And as others have said, price depends very much on location...
As an example and possible comparison, my daughter rents a room in a house with 2 others and pays £125 per week. This is in the Lambeth/Brixton area(south London), and is very conveniently located for where she is studying and working. Earlier this year she was paying just over £100 pw for a room in a house with 5 others further south in Herne Hill. However she was putting £15-20 pw on her Oyster card just to get around and still had a 10 minute walk to the nearest underground station. Good luck, and do factor in transport costs. |
Oh, and she does have to pay bills on top of the rent.
|
I don;t think any responsible landlord will allow 3 people - one a small child - to live in a bedsit esp one with such a very low budget.
I would provide more information and people may be able to make some better suggestions. It seems likely that you would do better finding a reasonable size flat in a suburban area and commuting to work. If you provide info on job location people can make recos on areas to look at. |
Sorry -
Have just reread your post where you say "we will be working". If you are both working who will be caring for the child? Have you investigated the child care you will need and the costs involved? It seems that your plan has a bunch of holes in it - besides the lack of funds. |
Here's another example, our son and his partner pay £1400/mo for a nice two-bedroom garden flat in Camden. Takes him 40 minutes to get to work in the City, near Bank of England. She has a terrible commute to Wimbledon, but that's another story.

This person is one of those who post as a joke. Look at his posting on the Europe board asking about 4* hotels and private car service.
|
I had noticed that --she posted about canceling at a Sofitel in France because of what Strauss-Kahn did at the Sofitel in New York(?!)
That's when I decided not to post add'l ideas. She does get around though -- asking about Thailand in late Oct and London bedsits in Nov. |
You're right - this makes no sense in light of the posts about 5* palace hotels and getting a private guide.
The question is which is the troll and which the real post - or are all trolls? |
