London Bath Stonehenge round trip?
 

I want to take the train to Bath for a day and take a quick trip to Stonehenge. I know the nearest train station to Stonehenge is Salisbury.

I have been converted by info on fodors.com to the idea of taking trains instead of organized tours.

I rethought taking a bus tour to Oxford, and found the train connection from Paddington and suitable tours in Oxford.

Can anyone help me plan a similar Bath/Stonehenge trip?

The best alternative seems to be an Alstral 16-person van tour.

I've never been to Bath, but if you are interested in Stonehenge, you can take a train directly to Salisbury. this is a nice city, whith an impressive cathedral, and the visit to the city and to Stonehenge make a wonderful day trip from London.

Sounds like you already know most of what you need to plan -- there's a bus from Salisbury to Stonehenge, it runs about every half-hour. In Bath, there are a couple of tour-bus companies that run those hop-on-hop-off tours, but the city is so compact they're not really necessary.

I just returned from an England trip one week ago and also did Bath, Salisbury & Oxford. Assuming you're starting in London, you can catch the train leaving from Paddington station to Bath, do the roman baths and cathedral and walk around the town, then hop on another train for a short 15 min ride to Salisbury. See the grand cathedral there, then hop on a bus to Stonehenge.

Train back from Salisbury will bring you back to Waterloo station in London.

Trains were very frequent between London - Bath - Salisbury - London, pretty much every 30-60 mins. Just check qjump.com for the full schedule.

We didn't actually go to Stonehenge, so I don't know the details of it. But you can pretty much ask the info booth people when you arrive (which is what we did most of the time to confirm our day trips). If you want to save, the best bet is just to use the local buses since they're very reliable and frequent (from what I've read).

Bus tours will probably take you much longer since the trains go so much faster and are very well priced.

I also read that going to Stonehenge later at night or sunset is quite nice too, but not sure if you need to pre-book that?

I have no personal experience with this company, but they offer 3 hour afternoon trips from Bath to Stonehenge for 12.50GBP and also do full day tours from Bath that also include Avebury.

We took the Mad Max tour from Bath and it was a nice day trip. We hit Stonehenge, Avebury and a couple quaint towns. Very nice people. Our tour was far from filled (on a minibus), but that may change with the season (this was in the Spring).
