In London, your best bet is to stay in a small hotel (usually owned, operated, and occupied by a family); get hold of a copy of Frommer. We found some gems in the Paddington Station area; not fashionable, but clean, quiet, safe, and reasonable by London standards. Now, if you want to have fun in the countryside, here's a great little book given us by some British friends. It's Elizabeth Gundrey's "Staying Off the Beaten Track in England and Wales," which is updated annually -- B&Bs, small hotels, lodges, etc. Marvelous, accurate, and current. It is published by: Arrow Books Ltd., 20 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW 1V 2SA. Perhaps your local library could arrange to obtain a copy on an inter-library loan; or you could pick up a paperback copy once you are in London. It is very popular over there; it's now in its 17th or 18th printing.
We used it when driving around Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, and Wales -- excellent. I would have to wonder if a companion book might be available for London, too.

Bloomsbury is a good area to look for less expensive lodging. I was there last September and stayed at The George B&B. Nightly rates were around $70 (with breakfast) and was quite satisfying. It's nothing glamorous and the rooms are really small but it's within 15 mins walk of Covent Garden, it's in a really nice neighborhood and the rooms are clean and decent. There are lots of other places in the neighborhood - some are really nice if you want to spend more. Let me know if you need the phone or fax number for the George as i could probably dig it up.

staying at a B&B in the Victoria area would put you in walking distance to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament. There's also a train/tube station in Victoria. There's a couple of B&B's in that area that I found for around 60-65 pounds ($100-110US dollars) per night. There's also a Holly House Hotel in that area for 45 pounds ($75US). However, i did not stay in any of these places but rather ended up staying in the Bayswater district. After my visit, I would have rather stayed in the Victoria area. Nevertheless, wherever you choose to stay, be sure that your hotel is near a tube station. By the way, I found all these hotels right here on the internet.
