That is a very good location -- Actually IN Notting Hill. and if you are there on a Saturday - it is just around the corner - well, a couple of corners - from Portobello Rd.

(I have more experience w/ Portobello Road than the probation office, but I HAVE been in that Oxfam Shop)

The probation office is opposite - on top of an off licence. Which helps.

<<Again "notting hill" is an elastic description that ranges from Notting Hill itself (which is like the film, but the real one has some black people in it) to Ladbroke Grove (well dodgy).>>

'black' people? please explain...

"Please explain"

Simple -- the movie didn't, the real place does

Ah. I see. So you're saying CW meant that it's a more diverse neighborhood in real life. Funny how the 'movies' leave out such details. ;-)

In the case of "Notting Hill" it was particularly egregious:

It's Europe's largest outdoors event.

It's actually a tiresome ordeal because of the crowds.

Notting Hill used to be a black area of London. We even had race riots there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notting_Hill_race_riots

The Carnival was set up the next year as a response.

It's an interesting area in Britains social history. It was Peter Rachman's domain (A man who has given us a word - Rachmanism - for slum landlords). It's also where John Christie lived ( a notorious serial killer).

If you're interstedin how Notting Was before it got rich, see the film 10 Rillington Place starring a young Richard Attenborough as Christie. It's shot in 1950s Notting Hill - a very different place than it is today.

Wow! I've got to share this tidbit with DH. We both love learning about the past. It's so interesting. Really, I should have been a history major.
