London apartment - "Damage Deposit". Is this normal?
Hi all,
We are about to finalize the apartment. In the invoice, they are asking for a damage deposit, which is about half the weekly rent. This is fine, except that they are saying that the deposit ill be returned upto 28 days after departure. This sounds odd, because if they deduct something after I'm gone, I'm not even in a position to dispute it. Our back-up apartment wants the same thing by credit card guarantee, but without caping any amount/period. That's even worse.
I'm just apprehensive about leaving this possible liability behind. I've asked both of them whether it's possible to have an inspection when we hand over the apartment, so that everything is settled. Have'nt heard back yet, but I thought I'd ask you guys as what is the norm?
The first apartment is from A Place Like Home and the other one from http://www.residence-apartments.com/ although I seem to be talking to a freelance agent, whos probably working on commission.

Some charge a damage deposit, some don't. Some return it upon check out, some up to a month later. Some want cash money, some want a credit card guarantee. All are totally normal ways deposits are handled all over Europe including in London. If it bothers you, there are other agencies/owners who do it differently . . . .

I rented an apartment through A Place Like Home and took the leap of faith about the damage deposit. Everything worked out fine. I loved the apartment, the agency was very professional, and the deposit was returned in due course.

Ditto Nikki. We had to leave a large deposit (450 GBP) and it was credited to my credit card one month after our return. We even made money when the dollar dropped in the interim.
Our apartment was great and so was A Place Like Home. Just let them know if you're going to be late.

Thanks all - have booked with A Place Like Home. It's a two bedroom apartment in Kensington Court. From what I have been able to research, they seem like a reputable firm. Thanks for your help - much appreciated.
