London and Edinburgh
 

My question is: is it worth it for us to travel from London to Edinburgh during our 9 day stay in London? We've never been to Edinburgh. We will be traveling as a family of 4 (46, 42, 10, and a 1.4 year old).

We are staying with friends in London so it will be cramped and a break might be welcome. Moreover, our friends, who have lived in London for 3 years now, haven't been to Edinburgh. They are considering traveling there with us by train. We would, of course, stay separately or rent an AirBNB.

Thoughts? Yeah or nay?

When? Especially in August (various festivals) Edinburgh can be very crowded and expensive (fun, too.)

Of course go there if time and resources allow. Edinburgh is one of Europe's greatest and most beautiful cities.

Morning train to Edinburgh -- 2 nights, early evening train back to London, and you will have nearly 2.5 days in Edinburgh which would be a great taste.

When are you traveling -- that is the biggest issue. August would be a problem. But otherwise it would be very easy.

For just 2 nights, I'd personally stay in a hotel -- or more precisely an aparthotel like Fraser Suites which is just steps from St Giles Cathedral/the Royal Mile.

Then I'd definitely do it. Train fares will be cheaper the earlier you book.

Edinburgh is a great place to visit the castle is wonderful.

My wife and I just returned from a trip to the UK and we took the train from London to Edinburgh and bought 1st class tickets.
The Kings Cross station has a 1st class lounge to use while waiting that had free snacks and soft drinks and was very comfortable. If you're Harry Potter fans you can find a platform 9¾ on the wall in the station concourse and a Harry Potter store.
We sat on the right side and the views were great. You see a lot of yellow fields which we were told were rapeseed.
On the train you get a small meal, free drinks (including beer), snacks and the service was excellent.
We thought it was worth the extra money to go 1st class.
We also thought Edinburgh was a great place to visit. Really enjoyed the castle, St. Giles, and the views from Calton Hill.
