"...need a car..." - If you mean renting, fugeddaboutit! London is the WORST European city to explore by rental car. If the Congestion Charge doesn't deter you, then the almost total lack of parking space (at exorbitant rates when it IS available) will.
If you mean taxis, then no problem (except that a bus will get you there in the same time at a fraction of the cost).

Not to hijack the thread, but my understanding is that the new carry-on restrictions in the EU, which will be effective throughout as of a particular date (I think it's prior to 5/5/2007), will make any distinction between airlines on this point moot.

Julie - you could take a taxi from your hotel to Paddington Station, where the Heathrow Express departs from. I've done that before, which is nice. The cost of it really depends on where your hotel is. Both airports are really nice, LHR is much busier than Gatwick. It seems I always get through customs much more quickly at Gatwick than Heathrow.

Julie: First, how I wish I had met you in Rome...my hubby and I were there when you were!!! At least Nov 11 to Dec 5th FANTASTIC DREAM COME TRUE We celebrated 40th wedding anniversary...AWESOME WILL CHAT more about Rome but for now perhaps I can help a little for London.
1. We came in at Heathrow-managed to catch Picadilly Line tube from there clear to small tube stop way north at ARNOS GROVE STATION. Seems a way doesn't it but IT WAS WORTH IT as we found a FANTASTIC charming B&B called Bay Tree House B&B in little suburb called Arnos Grove. Wonderfully close to tube connection, taxi and VERY reasonable pricing, charming, warm friendly accomodations, terrific breakfast and the nicest people you can imagine...James and Joyce Monaghan. 36 reviews alone of them on www.tripadvisor.com alone. Incredible hospitality and it is really convenient to all with tube making it a real value. We booked on www.baytreehouse.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk
They helped us acquire Oyster cards which is great way to use all transportation tube plus busses.
2. We were really smart and got a deal for unbooked hotel rooms using hotwire.com...I knew we wanted to stay at Crown Plaza near Heathrow...so gambled on using Hotwire having them select our room got fabulous one night stay before flying home. (Knew they had an indoor pool so filled in needs 4 star or more with indoor pool and at heathrow location) and Hotwire got a booking there at fantastic rate way below their normal rate.
3. We only had short time in London so took the hopon-hop off bus worked great!

Original_London_Open_Top_Bus_Tour.htm
This was ideal to saturate time with many locations.
Hope this helps. Loved your Rome bus suggestions! We did same thing...your right it can be mastered but takes time. The Roma Metrobus guide for 6 Euros is worth it! If you would like to write directly to me contact me at [email protected] or on the Fodor's site. You sound like a hoot! Wish we could travel together!!! Best wishes brendastarr

<<< Can someone tell me the best way to take the tube from Covent Garden tube station to transfer to Southern trains to Gatwick? >>>
Go to Charing Cross, train to London Bridge, train to Gatwick - you might not even have to change platforms

"Appreciate the airport transfer info, but now that I have a hotel location, any specific info on how to get to Stansted & from Gatwick or Stansted?"
Nobody seems to have mentioned Stansted so far...the Stansted Express train goes from Liverpool Street station, or there's a multitude of cheaper-but-slower coach services from Victoria. Definitely not a taxi journey, perhaps even more so than Gatwick!
