London Airports - which is easier to get to?
We are planning on catching a flight out of London to Amsterdam. Which airport is easiest to get to from London city center and fly out of? Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, or London City Airport? At first glance I am thinking London City?

You might want to check first which airlines fly out of each airport to Amsterdam and the airfares. Heathrow is on the tube line so not difficult to reach and Gatwick and Stansted are on the mainline train line so also not hard but it does take longer (and costs more). Luton is a pain, you have to take a tube, then mainline train then a bus shuttle to the airport.
If you want more specific info, just ask.

I despise Heathrow (especially Terminal 1 which I firmly believe has been modelled on hell). But it has good transport links (ie a choice!)
If I had to use one of the 'big' ones I'd probably choose Gatwick though as it's generally slightly less frantic.
City is a good bet if your departure point isn't too far west.
Stansted is a good 45 mins by Express. And I'd like you not to fly over my house and add to the air pollution and noise if at all poss, please........8-)

I would based my decision on:
1) Which flight is the cheapest
2) Which flight has the best times
There's no point for me to try to take a flight out of an airport at 6am; or a flight that arrives at 11pm.
But that's just me.

I hate the flights leaving at 6 AM, but I generally do not mind those arriving at 11 PM.
I've heard London City is the easiest airport, of those listed, but I've never used it as it has always been the most expensive for the flights I wanted.
Of the airports listed, I find Gatwick the easiest, but not easier enough to pay more for (or at least very little more).

it almost entirely depends on where you are staying in London. LCY is great - but not so hot if you are starting out from Knightsbridge. LGW is fine if you are leaving from Victoria or Kings Cross - not so easy from some other areas. LHR works wonderfully from anywhere along the Piccadilly line or right at Paddington Station - a pain from lots of other neighborhoods.
So as soon as you know where you are staying we can tell you which airport is most convenient

Luton can also be reached by express bus from the Victoria Coach Terminal. At least it could when we did it a few years ago. As has been said there are many variables in this equation! I am in a minority here in that I don't mind Heathrow.

Easyjet has never, and will never, fly from City or Heathrow - precisely because they are the two most convenient airports to central London and therefore the most expensive to operate out of. Nor do any other low-cost airlines, though conventional airlines sometimes offer highly competitive prices out of Heathrow - and from City at off-peak times
To the best of my knowledge, there is no destination Easyjet serves from all of the other three airports.
The most convenient airport from a location in central London is the one with flights that are convenient for you and suit your budget. The 20 minutes' difference in access time is trivial compared to the hassle of having to get to a "convenient" airport at 3 am or finding your flight goes somewhere 70 miles from where you thought it was going.
Start by working out who flies where you want to go to.

Thanks all for your friendly advice and comments. We are finally booked at the Hoxton Hotel and will be flying to Amsterdam on VLM Airlines out of London City Airport. I really hope the Hoxton and Shoreditch areas arent dead on Boxing day and days after. We could really enjoy some nightlife....
