London Accommodation
My wife and I are staying in London in April 2008 for 6 nights. Can anyone recommend a hotel that is good location wise for tourist activities. We dont want to drive but are quite ok using the tube and buses. I am considering waiting until March 2008 and trying a site like wotif.com to try and save some dollars. I sont mind spending $250US a night but if I can some money, then that is great. Is this too risky leaving it so late? Has anyone else had success using wofif or a similair type site. Thanks, Rick from Australia. p.s. I have not got my glasses on so I hope this is typed ok

You might check out the Premier Inns' London County Hall hotel, on the south side, just across the Westminster Bridge, near the Eye. Haven't stayed there, but on my short list in view of comments here and at Trip Advisor. |
Hi,
I ALWAYS use LondonTown.com and Booking.com. The second site ( and it's booking without the 's' ) I also use for European-wide bookings ( don't know if you are going on elsewhere) I look for a combination of location and discount but rarely attempt to pay less than £90 for a double room ( and that would be cheap). Both sites offer a great range of hotel, with up to 75% discount. As a Londoner can I offer some advice? Nothing under a 3 star, preferably 4 or 5 star with big discount ( using the recommended sites). Zone 1, particularly near South Kensington, High St Ken, Knightsbridge or the Strand and Covent Garden. Leaving it until March shouldn't be a problem - especially if you are flexible regarding location. |
I've had great success by bidding on Priceline in London - there are lots of threads here about it. In general, it's very hard to get better value for a 3* or 4* hotel.

My husband and I stayed last week at the Jesmond Dene Hotel. www.jesmonddenehotel.co.uk Great location,5 minutes from the Eurostar terminal. We walked into London city, caught the tube for other things,Kings Cross,5 minutes, too easy. Nice room, good bed, decent shower in our bathroom in room, tea and coffee in room ,hairdryer. I would just book it. We paid 90 pounds for a superior room. I am pretty fussy and I would stay there again.

huddoshols - Due to your mention of The Jessmond Dene Hotel you have done me a great favour.
I telephoned them direct a few minutes ago and got a better rate than Venere & others could give. Also, we are being accommodated in a twin-en-suite room that is larger than the others and not available for internet bookings. Thank you so much! |
I've stayed at jesmond Deene and not all their rooms are superior - mine was OK but nothing to write home about. So pay for the top room i guess.
So-so location - poor IMO and i've stayed in the ghetto of cheap B&Bs with at times dicey guests. But one of the cheapest areas in London to stay in if you need to save money. You could get a neat modern room at TravelLodge for less perhaps and better locations. |
All parts of London are just about equally accessible to all the sites via public transport or on foot.
London hotels are expensive. That is just the fact. Instead of paying a lot of money for 2 star B&B hotel in a sketchy area, or a LOT of money for a nice place in a better area -- use Priceline. PL is not great for some European cities, but it is brilliant for London. Check out biddingfortravel.com to see how PL works in London. You can get a centrally located 4 star place for around $100+ plus taxes. Plan on maybe $100 - $130-ish total. MUCH better than what you can get for £125 from reglar booking/hotel sites |
If you can get a 4-star hotel for about 50 pounds jump on it - it'a steal and don't worry about location.

Thank you so much everyone for your helpful feedback. I must say the LondonTown.com website was very helpful. We managed to get a room at the Hyde Park Hilton for 99 pounds a night, including breakfast and two dinners. Great price. I must say that the willingness of travellers to assist each other is very refreshing and so I wednt and answered some questions people had about Australia. Great community spirit on this site. Thank you all.
