Saw a blurb in the local fish wrap about London Mayor 'Red' Ken Livingston helping to unveil a statue of Nelson Mandela in Parliament Square - and it was said this is the first of the statues in the square erected whilst the person was still alive.

And the frail 89-year-old Mandela was there to mark the occasion. Ken basked in the glow of this most remarkable and to me lovable person - the Mayor said a lot of platitudes, etc.

Amongst the other statues here are those of Churchill and Abraham Lincoln, which ties in neatly with 'Red' Ken's recent public apology on behalf of Londoners for the city's support of slavery during slave trading days. Lincoln of course freed no slaves and really never came out against the practice i believe - at least until late in the war, which was fought over states rights to succeed and not abolishing slavery.

Anyway on your way to Parliament pause a bit to oogle the new Mandela statue and those of other famous figures in history.

I believe Lincoln's plan was to send the slaves back to Africa.
