I wasn't aware Ryanair has any flights from Gatwick. Are you sure you don't mean Stansted (most likely) or Luton (less likely)?
In any event, the drive is really going to vary depending how bad traffic is.

I was just on the Ryan Air website and, in addition to Luton or Stansted , it flies from Gatwick. In terms of distance, are these airports near Heathrow - on a good day with average traffic are we looking at 30- minutes or 3 hours???

Sorry, not sure what I was thinking. Ryanair does indeed do flights from Gatwick (to Dublin).
The NationalExpress.com bus is one way to transfer between the two airports. Take a look at the web site to see their estimated driving times to get an idea, but keep in mind the buses are often quite late. The late night runs, when presumably there is little traffic, are supposed to take 70 minutes. So I imagine a car service would take about the same amount of time.

Also keep in mind that RyanAir closes it's check-in desk 40 minutes before the flight and they don't care if you were next in line. You are not checked in at the 40th minute, you are out of luck.
Also, read their baggage policy. They are VERY strict. It could be costly if you happen to travel heavy.

Let me put say it another way:
This is not directed at you per se as I don't know where you are flying from, but to any future American(s) coming off international flight from US at Heathrow and connecting at Gatwick or vice-versa:
If you are flying in the premium cabin from US and you don't have any checked luggage and you have boarding passes all the way through your final destination and you know what you are doing - allow 3 hours minimum for connections.
If you have checked luggage - add at least 30 minutes.
If you are not checked all the way through the final destination - also add 30 minutes.
If you are flying coach - add 30 minutes
If all three are true - allow 4-4.5 hours connection time.
If you are connecting to RyanAir - definitely add major time. I would say at least 5 hours or more.
