lokrum/islands off of dubrovnik/beach along coast d to split
 

will be there early october. Told that the freqent ferry stops going to lokrum end of september. Daughter is interested in spending only an hor or at most two while with very limited time enjoying the walled city of dubrovnik seeing the "beach". Something that would have cafes etc. Anything right at dubrovnik that would fit the bill? without loosing a day or most of the day. Will also get a transfer to go to Split, possibly something along the coast that we can stop and look at for 30minutes or so.

The ferry to Lokrum will still be running every couple of hours in October. You will find it at the harbour in the Old Town. Also other small boats will be offering island trips as well.

Once you get to Lokrum you have to walk through the woods to the cafe by the old monastery, or to the little inland sea or the beaches there. It is really peaceful and pleasant to spend a few quiet hours. Make sure you are back at the dock in time to get your return ferry - it won't wait for you! Allow a full morning or afternoon for this trip.

Just outside the Walls by the Ploce Gate is Banje beach which is sandy. On the other side of the city by the Pile Gate there is another small beach below the Lovren fort. The main beaches are out on the Lopud peninsula.

There are cafes everywhere in and around Dubrovnik.

If you have a guidebook it will contain a map of Dubrovnik, so you can see exactly where the beaches are in relation to the Old Town and decide which is best for your daughter. Do try to fit in time to walk the Walls and explore the myriad narrow streets of the Old Town. You'd probably enjoy that much more than going over to Lokrum.

we went to Lokrum last year at the beginning of October and there seemed to be quite a few ferries then although they didn't run late in the day. We went toward the end of the afternoon, not for the beach, and walked. In addition to the areas mentioned in the last post there is a large botanical garden and from there a climb up to the old fort with splendid views of the area. I don't have any basis for comparing Lokrum beaches to others right on the mainland.

I forgot to mention before that one advantage of going out to Lokrum or one of the other islands is that you get a view of Dubrovnik from the water. But I agree with julia_t that walking the city walls is a higher priority if you have to choose.

sounds like it would be great to get a nice view of dubrovnik from the sea: please advise regarding options apart from going to lokrum

There may be short cruises that would give you this perspective on the city from the water. Maybe others have suggestions. The ferry ride out to Lokrum is short, about 10 minutes, so a round trip would not take long.

We stayed in Plat which is south of Dubrovnik and took a water taxi from there to the city, then took another water taxi in the evening to Cavtat for dinner and a bus back to Plat. This bus route goes on to Dubrovnik, and there are frequent buses. Cavtat is a charming city with a lot of history but you might not want to leave Dubrovnik if you only have a short time there.
