Lodging in Zurich and Lucerne?

We will be exhausted after a very long travel schedule and might decide to "recover" in Zurich and/or Lucerne before continuing. Does anyone have hotel suggestions that would be comfortable for weary travelers in August?

I like The B&B in Luzern ( http://www.thebandb.ch ). It's within walking distance to the central old town area. It's comfortable, modern, and not nearly as expensive as other Luzern options. However, the bathrooms are shared, not in suite. Still, there are 8 bathrooms for 10 guest rooms.

IMO it depends on

where you are arriving in Zurich. At the train station (eventually) and do you want to spend another hour or even less on a train to Luzern or are you willing to take a train to Luzern directly from the airport?

There are direct trains to Luzern and ones which you'll need to change trains in Zurich.

That decided, is budget an issue?

If not, the Schweizerhof hotel is directly across the street from the Zurich main station and other hotels are within easy walking distance.

Edward2005, the bad and b looks interesting. thanks.

Dukey, we will arrive at Zurich airport. Will either take the train directly to Lucerne or go to Zurich first to collapse, relax, and explore before heading elsewhere.

Direct trains leave the ZRH airport hourly at :47 after the hour and take just over an hour.

Pick a lakefront or riverfront hotel in Lucerne, it is more manageable than big Zurich, and you'll recover in style. Lots to choose from as long as you do it soon.

One reliable way is to go to Google maps, zoom in large, until business names appear, switch to street view and "walk" around, then go to the website of any property that looks appealing, and search for that name to see reviews by others. Soon you'll have what you want.

Hi elnap29,

Do you have a budget for your stays in Luzern & Zürich?

I stayed in the 4-star Hotel des Balances in Luzern and adored it. It's right in the old town, and my room faced the Jesuit church across the river -- I loved watching the swans on the river at the foot of the steps by the church. The restaurant was amazing, too. It was always crowded with lots of folks, not just guests from the hotel. I kept trying to eat elsewhere but would get drawn back by the menu.

The 3-star Hotel Des Alpes is just down the river a bit, and lots of folks have enjoyed staying there.

Have fun as you plan!
