Will be in rome from 11/3 to 11/7. We are looking for accomodations for a family of four. (myself, wife, and two boys 13 and 11). Would consider two rooms, but would prefer 1. Could you recommend any hotels under $150. Under $100 would be nice too.

We just went to Europe in August and found the best way to go was to find a pension- 1 room with bathroom and a larger bedroom for hubby and I and then a simple room with 2 twins for our 13 and 17 year old. We got breakfast and dinner for about $100 a day. Kids were put across the hall and used our bathroom. The other way was to find a triple in have them bring in a rollaway. Here is one possiblity I found in my Frommer's book. Hotel Margutta (around the Spanish Steps) 06/3223674/ Fas is 06/3200395. Triple is $121.60. Includes Breakfast. "offers attractive decorated rooms and a helpful staf. Best rooms on top floor. Two of these share a terrace, and another one has a large bedroom. No t.v., or phones or air cond. Also try www.eurotrip.com (has a family travel board) and try www.ricksteves.com (europe thru the backdoor)

Oops, I forgot to mention that Holiday Inns have chains all over europe and while you may think you want to stay away from anything American while there, when I went they offered rooms in Europe, that always sleep 4 (just like American rooms-with two double or two queens) for $99. Call 1-800-EUROPE FOR LESS. Ask them to send you the book with all of their hotels in Europe and they can give you availability and prices over the phone and they have a website. I'll go in and find it if you are interested--E mail me and I'll get it to you.Also in the Eurotrip forum is a link you can click wherein you type in the city you need a room in and hotel will come up with pictures, descriptions etc. Some of the BEST WESTERN hotels were very nice and very European and had lower rates also and these are displayed in the eurotrip forum.

Cotton: thanks so much for your reply. I kind of paniced on Sunday and sent over 22 e-mails to
hotels I found on the WWW.venere.com site. I have received over fifteen replies, whch was great.
However, what I didn't have was a strategy as to how to approach. I like your idea of 1 double w/bath and 1 without. The Margutta is a good suggestion -- did you like it? Was the terrace nice?
I have found a couple of quads -- do you have any
comments about those?

Didn't stay at Margutta, didn't go to Rome-found that for you in my trusty Frommer's guide which hasn't failed me yet. As for the times we did stay in quads, I don't know about you but it was like having 4 adults in the room and my husband and my 18 year old daughter do not co-exist together in those close quarters. Rooms are small compared to US. We
would have to stand on a bed for the other to get in/out of room. We did get lucky in Germany and found a beaut with a huge room and a huge bathroom--all tiled, towel warmers etc. Tubs there are high, compared to ours and I about killed myself slipping on the tile. The Pension with the two rooms across the hall, was my favorite setup- great for the kids too-they felt more grown up and we all knew when the dining room was open for our breakfast and lunch buffets so my husband and I could get up and eat while kids slept and then we would wake them on our return. Then they would shower and eat.
