Lodging in Lauterbrunnen and Grindenwald in October
 

I am considering the following for lodging during Oct. 16-19 stay in Berner Oberland. If anyone has feedback regarding a recent stay or has another recommendation, INCLUDING AN APT OR B&B, please share. One place I was considering, Chalet Rosa, will be closed during my visit. I am considering the towns of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald at the lower elevations (passing on the hugely popular Wengen) at the suggestion from a Fodorite that inclement weather will be more likely at this time of year and heading in a different direction will be easier from those locations.

We stayed at the Silberhorn (TA review under same sign-in name) and liked it very much. We stayed in the annex room, which had a nice balcony with a view of a small falls. Rustic. Breakfast was average, though coffee was great. Beautiful, light breakfast room.

We were super nervous when we arrived and found that the aerial tram was really close to our room. We never heard it running. It's nothing to worry about.

We loved taking long walks along that valley.. and if you get a chance to go up to Murren, we liked it better than Wengen.

I've stayed at the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof in Grindelwald two times, once for a ski week and once with my mother. Its ambiance, management, and staff are the best -- of course, as the hallmarks of that hotel association. I had amazing views over to peaks; I think that if you want some great views from the mountain, this hotel ought to be high on your list. It was a few minutes' walk from the train station.

I also stayed at the Belvedere in Grindelwald one time, also for a ski week, but I didn't care for it much. Its decor was more business/modern, and it didn't seem to reflect the beauty and charm of its location. Also, my room had not-wonderful views of the back of the village, just a small valley and more buildings.

I would second Murren. Remember the 'White Christmas' that year in Murren,a car free village.Stayed at the SportChalet. Brilliant view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau,the valley,the
beautiful glittering lights of Lauterbrunnen below.

I did see other pretty chalets each better than the other.I'm sure, there are others who'll chime in.

kawh-Thank you for confirmation on the Hotel Silberhorn. I may have already read your review, but will look again.

swandav-I love the looks of Romantik Hotel but when I put in my dates, they say no availability. The Belvedere has availability, but I think Hotel Gletschnergarten would be preferable. If they don't have availability, I would need to specify my preferred view of the mountains.

inquest-Murren or Wengen would have been a top choice had it not been mid-October. Another Fodorite suggested I seek lodging at the lower elevations to make it easy to head elsewhere should the higher elevations have inclement weather.

Hoping I might get a few apt recommendations.

Why not just stay in Interlaken for off-season trip?

It is just 20 minutes by train from Lauterbrunnen.

I would email the Hotel Schwiezerhof and ask to be put on a waiting list. Other guests might cancel between now and then.

I personally would chance it. I think the views & ambiance of Wengen are simply worth the risk -- and a low risk at that (considering global climate change ...). I stayed two times at the 3-star Hotel Alpenrose in Wengen (ski week each time), and it was practically perfect in every way, especially the astounding views.

We were in Lauterbrunnen in 2012 we stayed in an owners direct property called chalet horner. It was simple but functional an inexpensive..had a little kitchen we stayed in the studio https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUser...n_of_Bern.html

We stayed at The Belvedere in Grindenwald in a 5th floor room w/ Eiger view. Lovely! Our son had a single w/ Wetterhorn view. Also nice.

Breakfast included was outstanding!

Yes much nicer views from Grindelwald hotels than those in Lauterbrunnen's deep canyon.

Love those Swiss hotel breakfasts - can eat enough to get thru lunch, saving a fortune (but don't do as Rick Steves once advised to feret food for later from the buffet, though tempting!

I'm not sure I agree with PalenQ about the views -- the views from Lauterbrunnen that face the valley feature some pretty spectacular scenery!
