Lodging in a Scottish Castle ?

My daughters (9&11yrs) would really like an overnight stay in a castle.<BR>We're heading to Scotland May 9-19. Doing Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen at least.<BR><BR>I've read here that it's quite pricey and not worth the effort - any suggestions on appeasing my two romantics ?<BR><BR><BR>Kathy.

Why not visit a couple of castles; then take them for lunch in a castle hotel so they can see the difference?

I know my parents stayed at a castle in Edinburough and loved it, but can't remember the name of it.... but why don't you check out the Landmark Trust in the UK? their web site is www.landmarktrust.co.uk. They have houses, apartements, etc that were owned by different Brits throughout the world (there are even two or three houses here in the US) and range in price and "uniquness" and extravagence. VERY interesting. We stayed in a beautiful manor house outside Stirling (Gargunack House) that was owned by the Striling family. The houses have their own Kitchens etc....

There are a number of places that help you book nights in Scottish castles.<BR>(We are doing exactly what you are doing with our kids this summer at two different castles!)<BR><BR>You are correct, it is expensive, but we decided to alter our budget just a bit and went for it!<BR><BR>I hope that these sites help:<BR><BR>http://www.celticcastles.com/index.html<BR><BR>http://www.castles.org/Chatelaine/accomm.htm<BR><BR>http://www.aboutscotland.com/scottscastle/hotels.html<BR><BR>http://www.clansandcastles.com/accommodation.htm<BR><BR>http://www.usagateway.visitbritain.com/NewHome/dynamic/accommodations.htm?type=35&region=3<BR><BR>Tim Stark

Well, if you happen to be in the Inverness area (the Western Highlands are incredibly beautiful; Loch Ness is worth the ride), you could stay at a 17th Century hunted Tower castle, The Stuart Castle. Check the photos at http://www.castlestuart.com/ The castle tour in itself is a riot, full of secret stairways, alcoves, and hidden doorways. I recalled the tour was about $5/pp, the rooms were a bit pricey, though. Anyway, do not miss the area if you can. Also, I strongly recommend you do a search for Sheila's postings. She oferred incredible, detailed, priceless advice to visitors to Scotland and I am sure some of her old postings are still around. Have fun! I can't wait to go back to Scotland, friendliest people in the world.

Hi Kathy, we are booked at Culcreuch Castle in July (kids aged 9 & 11 also). We are attending a wedding, the bride lives in Glasgow so I don't think the Castle can be too far from Glasgow. It is pricey (especially the xchange from Cdn.$$) but I put it down to our one extravagance of the trip and am trying to economize on the rest of our accomodation. I hope it will be worth it. I think they only have a few rooms. The website is www.culcreuch.com.

Kathy: <BR>I'm pretty sure that Stuart Castle doesn't take children -- I tried to book a night there. We are planning to stay at Castle Venlaw in Peebles and Barcaldine Castle near Oban. I also liked what I heard about Tulloch Castle north of Inverness (lots of good things from this site) and Comlongon, near Dumfries, but couldn't get a night at either. Good luck!

Another wonderful castle in Scotland, though it is in the pricey range, is Dalhousie castle, south of Edinburgh. I can highly recommend it. You'll feel pampered, and, since it is on its own estate, would be a quiet lull in a what can be a very busy time.

I second Linda's recommendation. I stayed at Dalhousie about 3 yrs ago and it was great. Very relaxing in the Library in the evening. Horses grazing on the hills and you can also go into Bonnyrigg and get a bus into Edinburgh
