Location of car rental in Rome
Can anyone tell me which location in Rome (there are LOTS on Autoeurope) would be the easiest as far as getting OUT of Rome to head to Montepulciano? We are staying near Piazza Novona. We don't really want to go to the airport to rent unless it is the easiest.

You could plot all these addresses on google maps. But I've done that and it really doesn't help. I've rented from Termini area, via Veneto area, and further to the northeast.
Not all the offices that AutoEurope lists will be open when you want them to be, or have the car you want, at the rate you want. If you are determined to rent in Rome your best choice is probably at Termini. Slowtrav.com has very specific instructions written by a member, for getting out of the area. However, they didn't work very well for us, and roads change frequently. IMO, Rome is some of the most hellish driving on earth, with one way streets that change all the time, from block to block and year to year, if not month to month. My experiences suggest getting a train out of Rome and picking up a car someplace else. Many people find Chiusi convenient for southern Tuscany. I suppose the airport is easier than a city rental, but I have been in a traffic jam coming from Fiumicino, headed into Tuscany, that made me weep. And as you said, you would have to haul yourselves to the airport. All roads may lead to Rome, but they were never meant for cars. (I hope you get a conflicting opinion. Surely someone has had better luck driving in and out of Rome than we have had, on many occasions.) |
It is a little difficult to drive out of Rome.... I would take the train up to Orvieto and rent from there.

I think the easiest is Via Ludovisi 38, a Europcar location very close to Villa Borghese (which has a Hertz location in the Park Si garage underneath), so that you can head almost due north toward Tuscany. This is the consensus on SlowTrav, but tuscanlifeedit's warning about the difficulty of driving in Rome is not an exaggeration.

Let's just say I won't do it again, after several attempts.
Slowtrav.com also has those directions from the underground garage that alohatoall mentions. |
This is why I love this board. I think it is a very smart suggestion to take the train out of Rome and rent elsewhere. Thank you, seasoned travellers!

It's easy. This is the location I use no matter where I'm staying in Rome. It's the closest office to Porta Pinciana, which is the preferred "wall" exit of Rome for going to Tuscany. After you exit through the arch, follow Via Pinciana, which turns into Via Salaria. Drive northeast and follow signs to Circonvallazione Settentrionale, the highway that circles Rome, and then follow signs to A1 Nord. |
We live in Rome and Orte is an easy shot and there is rental agencies there too.
