Locanda San Trovaso/Venice

Would like to hear from anyone who has stayed at the Locanda San Trovaso, or has any information about it. Still trying to find a hotel in Venice that's not too far from all the sites, but in a quiet area and with a canal view. Also in my budget - $100 - 150 a night.

scotty Jul 28th, 2001 07:15 AM

we stayed at the san trovaso this past may. friendly staff, the canal in front of the hotel was under construction, so was noisy in the daytime. the canal view room was large, no tv or telephone, no shelf space in bathroom.
my biggest complaint-i like to go for long walks early in the morning but you could not exit or enter the hotel without disturbing a staff person(usually asleep in a room next to the lobby).
another budget choice might be the allogi alla scala, listed in the rick steves book. we had a large double there 2 years ago, next to a canal on the gondola route.
good luck

Hi Scotty--

I too am in same boat as Barb and visiting Venice in mid October. By chance, do you have any means for us to contact the Allogi alla Scala? I am not that computer savvy and if you have website or e-mail info. I would truly appreciate it! Molto grazie!

Julie Jul 30th, 2001 06:06 AM

I actually happen to have the info you requested on Alloggi Alla Scala handy.

Alloggi Alla Scala
Campo Manin #4306, San Marco
041/521-0629 phone
041/522-6451 fax

There was no website listed (it's a very small place). However, you might want to do a search on Google and see if something comes up. Hope this helps.

stayed at locanda san trovaso a year ago. the canal was under repair then, too. it is a seven room recently constituted hotel with friendly owners and a quiet location is dorsoduro. i thought it quite pleasant and would stay there again. forget the breakfast, tho. ciao.

debbie Jul 30th, 2001 02:21 PM

Dale, what didn't you like about the breckfast? Was it the typical continental breckfast that did not appeal to you? Food quality? Am curious.

Julie-- thank you for the information. Were you considering this hotel for your trip as you said you had it handy?

Barb Jul 30th, 2001 02:50 PM

This hotel was booked for the time I was going to be there (end of Sept. beginning of Oct.) as are just about every hotel in Venice!! HELP

. . . and another couple for you to investigate. Both of these are in your price range. Some of the ones I listed in my prior post are probably outside the $150 price.

I've stayed @ Hotel Galleria --- it's small, only 10 rooms & suspect it may already be booked. One caveat, you don't want to stay in their single room. When they say it's small, (closet-size) ain't kiddin.

-------------------
Ai Do Mori
Calle Larga San Marco 658
30124 - San Marco - Venice
Tel. 041/5204817 - 5289293
Fax 041/5205328

Actv San Marco, San Zaccaria
Friendly warm and welcoming. debbie

i don't think the alla scalla is on line, which is why we didn't use it this year, the internet has spoiled me.

the breakfast at the san trovaso consists of packaged cookies and rolls that the maid leaves when she(or he) does the room.

dale Jul 31st, 2001 05:47 AM

debbie: scotty forgot the "box" of orange juice that accompanied the packaged crackers left on the table. i still liked the place, tho. btw, it was recommended by the folks at the hotel galleria. phone number: 011 39 041 2771146. i can recommend, also, a nice apartment for roughly the same price ( also in dorsoduro). ciao.

Julie Jul 31st, 2001 07:01 AM

Debbie - In answer to your question, no I'm not planning to stay at Alloggi Alla Scala at this time. It was just a coincidence that I had my Rick Steves' book with me while I was updating some personal travel notes. It sounds, though, as if Robin has some excellent suggestions. If there's anything else I can help you with, please feel free to e-mail me directly: [email protected]. Happy hunting.

thank you for the information. Were you considering this hotel for your trip as you said you had it handy?
Barb Jul 31st, 2001 09:08 AM

Thanks for all the great responses. I finally found and confirmed reservations at the Hotel Guerrato (in Rick Steves book). Have to go down the hall to the bathroom, but we're only going to be there for two nights and don't plan on being in our room that much and a real bargain at 150.000 lr. Anyone know of this hotel?

Julie Jul 31st, 2001 09:19 AM

Barb, I stayed at the Guerrato on my first two trips to Venice and have always had a great experience. I just started recently staying in the Dorsoduro (at La Calcina) because of my friends who live nearby. I think you'll be very happy at the Guerrato. Roberto, Piero and Giorgio are excellent inn-keepers and will keep you entertained. I also think the location and price out-weigh the inconvenience (?) of not having your own bathroom. If you're located where I think you are, you only have to share this bathroom with 2 other rooms on the floor. I would return to this place in a heartbeat if I was travelling off-season (Dorsoduro is a little quieter). Have a great trip!

Barb Jul 31st, 2001 10:39 AM

Julie:

Thanks so much, that makes me feel SO much better. I had tried the La Calcina because I thought that area would be nice, but it was booked. Everything was booked, so I am really glad I could get into the Guerrato. Nice to hear about the bathroom situation too. Any nice places to eat in the area?

Julie Jul 31st, 2001 12:50 PM

Barb, One restaurant I remember is: Poste Vechie, Pescheria Rialto, 041/721-822. Very charming place where the emphasis is on seafood and you're in a wonderful area to try it (around the corner from the fish market). Also, ask Roberto & Piero for their suggestions about where they would eat -the un-touristed places. They'll steer you in the right direction. Believe me, there's plenty of places tucked down those alleys in the Guerrato's neighborhood. Enjoy!

Hello. Has anyone recently stayed at the Locanda San Trovaso that would share their recent experiences. I have narrowed our places to stay and this one is one of them. Thank you for sharing.
