Locanda Cipriani ... Venice to Torcello for dinner?
 

We're considering Locanda Cipriani on island of Torcello for our Anniversary. Few questions...

1) Can I get public water taxi there? About how far/how much from St.Mark Square? I can't seem to figure it out on the Alilaguna site.

2) Hoping to eat outside in the gardens...so thinking maybe an early dinner might be a better option...when is too early for a dinner in Venice?


3)Average dinner costs? Anyone been there rescently...just trying to get a gage so if I get out there we don't have sticker shock... there site has no prices.

You would take a regular vaporetto to Torcello, not Alilaguna. Alilaguna is mostly for airport transfers.

The trip on the LN from Fondamenta Nuove will take 30-40 minutes. Add on time for transit from San Marco.

We can't make a judgment on outside dining unless we know the time of year you are traveling.

When are you planning on going to Locanda Cipriani? What month?
In the fall/winter they don't serve in the garden. The staff is very accommadating and will bring coffee outside after your meal.
It really is a lovely setting...and many of the tables on the inside face the garden.

I haven't had dinner at Locanda Cipriani...but have had lunch on two different occassions.
The first lunch was Nov 2006....the total bill came to 134 euro. Including 2 glasses of prosecco and a bottle of Balspichl Gewurztraminer/Suditrol-Alto Adige (26euro) We had the prix-fix three course ...there were two different ones to choose from...my sister had "Burano" an emphasis on fish... and I had "Autunno"...a more meaty selection.

The second lunch was on Valentine's Day this year. My husband and I ordered from the main menu. The bill came to 201 euro...including a 48E bottle of wine (wine notes in husband's book, I can't remember off the top of my head) and two glasses of dessert wines Torcolato and Dindarello. It was Carnivale so they also served a special extra dessert...the most amazing flaky-crispy triangles covered with powder sugar and light-as-air donut holes.
Note...the cheese selections were very pedestrian..skip and go for a dessert!!

Both meals were very nice...it was a lovely trip out to Torcello.

You can also catch the LN line at San Zaccaria stop. We took the 10:15 and arrived at Torcello around noon.

The pix-fix was a good deal and watching the $$ amount of the wines is a good way to cut back on the total of the bill. (The prix-fix were 45 and 48euro)

Bailey: Thanks so much for the details of your meals. What does "pix-fix" mean?

"Prix Fixe" means exactly the same in Italy as it does here - a set multi-course meal for a fixed price (prix fixe). It may include from 3 courses( appetizer, main course and dessert) up to 5 or 7 courses. Coffee is sometimes - but not always included. Wine is very rarely included - unless you are having a special tasting menu with the wines matching the foods.

Have checked the restaurant's web site and they don't list the menu on line - but it is apparent that it's very upscale.

Just to clarify tranport options in Venice. A water taxi is a privately owned taxi cab, it's just that it's a boat instead of an automobile--it'll take you wherever you want to go. A vaporetto is a public bus; just like a bus in a city with set stops along the canals and islands, except it's a boat.

We went to lunch there, probably very close to this time last year - it was a wonderful experience and I don't think as expensive as the previous posters but we did not have multicourse meal - I think we split an appetizer, each had a main course - not sure about dessert. I think we had a carafe of house wine so the wine costs were pretty reasonable. I can still remember my main course - a yummy pasta dish with green noodles and ham (proscuito?) - it was very tastey - not lean cuisine. As in many nice European restaurants there were some extra little tasties, I always like that. We sat outside under an arbor - the service was very nice. I didn't think it was any more expensive than other good Venetian restaurants and the food was better and service more pleasant. And the boat trip over and back has great views of Venice and the lagoon. Happy anniversary and have a great trip to Venice!

Our cousin was married in Venice and had his wedding reception on Torcello at Locanda Cipriani. It was fabulous. What a great destination for an anniversary!
