Local markets in Italy
 

Our long awaited first trip to Italy is just a few weeks away. We will have 4 full days in Rome, 3 full days in Florence, and 4 full days in Venice. We will be renting an apartment in each location and plan on dining in for several of our meals.
We are looking for suggestions for great local markets in the areas near our apartments...places where we can stock up on the basics, but also find some great gourmet meats, cheeses, wine, etc.
In Rome we are staying near the piazza della rovere, between the Vatican and the Tiber River. In Florence we are between the Ponte Vecchio and the Hotel Lungarno. And in Venice we'll be right next door to the Hilton Molino Stucky on Giudecca Island.
I have emailed each of the apartment owners regarding their suggestions but have received very generic responses. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Only know Venice but there's a Conad basically directly across the Guidecca canal from you on the Zattere. It's a couple doors down from the San Basilio stop. If you have transport across the canal from your rental (like if it's part of the Hilton) you can go whenever you like. Otherwise you'll need use the Vaparetto or ask about shops on Guidecca. We really liked the Conad-great meat, cheeses, olives, bread, wine & beer.

Conrad is a good choice but you have to cross the Giudecca Canal by boat as said above. It used to be Bila super market.
On Guiudecca side, along the water, there was one super market, i remember. Near Redentore or maybe Palanca boat stop. Some distance, maybe close to 10 minutes walk if the market is near the farther stop ( redentore ) but the walk on this water side street is a delight with a gorgeous view of Venice proper with Salute and all. This shop is smaller than Conrad with less fresh food but you still can get basic things. Sorry i don't remember its name. Its entrance facing the Giudecca Canal is discreet, perhaps you need to look carefully.

Thank you guys for the feedback. We actually do have free access to the Hiltons's shuttle, which goes to Zattere or San Marco. The Conrad sounds great!

If you will be in Venice on a Wednesday, there is a farmer's market with produce grown by the women in a correctional facility there.

For wine, you'll find a better selection than they have at Conad at Gia Schiavi, on the opposite side of the Zattere. They have one of the best selections of wine and liquor in town, and they serve wine by the glass and really good crostini, too.

PS the farmers market is on Giudecca :) otherwise I would say to go to the Rialto market to shop for produce.

In rome you don't have a good market close by but plenty supermarkets. For wine go to enoteca costantini on piazza cavour.

That area in Rome doesn't have grat local markets, but if you are willing to move a little bit with public transportation, you should try absolutely the "Mercato di Testaccio" in Testaccio district:

And another market in Rome you should absolutely go is the one close by the Circo massimo and the Palatine hill, so even in an area that you will go to explore for sure. The name of this market is "Campagna Amica" in Via di S. Teodoro, 74, 00186 Roma, Italia

Campagna Amica is amazing because has all zero km great products, you should absolutely buy cheese over there and prosciutto, salami and many other delicacy.
The only problem of this market is that opens only saturday and sunday up to 3:30pm. So you can visit it only if you are in Rome in the weekend.

Close to your address there is even another market that worth pass by to buy good food and it is called "MERCATO TRIONFALE"

It is a huge market where to buy good food but less caracteristic than the previous two.

I don't know about Florence and Venice because I am from Rome :)

in Florence, the Mercato Sant'Ambroglio, just north of Santa Croce has a very "local" atmosphere, and a great cafe to boot.
