Local friend/guides
I read an article a few months ago about a website where you can find locals who will show you around their own cities based on your interest. For example, if you're a music lover visiting Amsterdam, a local would take you to venues that showcase your kind of music. I thought the article was in the New York Times but can't find it. Does this site sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

They have something like that in Paris, using volunteers, but I'm not aware of this type of thing in other cities.
The NYT travel search engine is dreadful. It used to be good but no longer. Very difficult to find anything there. |
Now I see they removed the travel search engine. Oh well.

Are you talking about this?: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Greeters_Network
Don't see that they are anywhere but Paris and don't see that they specialize in whatever a person happens to be interested in. |

We had a marvelous experience with the Paris Greeters a couple of years ago. Here is the link: http://www.parisgreeters.fr/?lang=en Given our interests, they matched us up with a marveous woman who took us on a tour of her neighborhood, Belleville/Menillmontant. We got to see things very few tourists ever encounter.
The tours are free, and the guides will not take gratuities. They are proud of their city, and want others to appreciate it. Of course, it is suggested that a donation to the organization would be appreciated. We made a donation when we booked, and were so very pleased we made another when we got home. |
