I have heard great things about Ljubljana, however I have not been there yet. But just to clarify, it is not the capital of Slovakia, rather Slovenia. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia.

Hi,
I am living in Slovenia. If you are coming to Slovenia in December the weather will be cool and snowy just like in the Midwest(USA). The city is pretty and has a castle looming in the middle. Many people say this is a small Prague.

Only 1.9 million people live in this country so LJU is not a huge city, but a cosy city with several museums and cultural attractions.

The entire country is safe. My female Slovenian friend told me that she feels perfectly comfortable walking around at night as do I. Just take normal travel precautions.

Hotels: There are several types.
High: Lev International 5 stars: 00386 61 133-2155
Mid: Austrotel Kompass (4) 132-6133
Grand Union 308-1270
Holiday Inn 308-1170
Slon Best Western: 170-1100
Low: M 1593-337
Park 133-0546
Turist 132-2343
Motels & Pensions:
Motel Kompass:611-200
Lieber 161-2123
Mrk 121-9600
Pri Spornu 727-000
Hostels: there are four, call this number for info: 312-156

You should be VERY ok with 250/day. Food is not very expensive, transportation for bus and train (domestic) range from a few $ to 25$. International train tix are depending on route. For example, round trip to Salzburg is approx $55. Zagreb, Croatia by bus is approx $25 R.t. You will be able to do a lot of little trips. I recommend Zagreb, Venice, Salzburg, Budapest and Vienna.

If you are just planning to stay in Lju for the 16 days you may get bored. THe city takes only a day to walk around without going to museums. So, plan some trips!

If you need more info let me know. I will visit this page again to check if you reply.

Happy traveling. Oh-many people speak English here too! BUT, learn some phrases before you come! The basic phrases are pretty easy! For more info on Slovenia go to DOGPILE.com and type in Slovenia.

MJD
You will not need air condition in Dec, but HEAT. Only spring and fall are warm.
Go to www.slovenia-tourism.si. At the click of your mouse they will send you some wonderful brouchures which list cheaper pensions and motels. There are maps of slovenia and Ljubljana, etc. There's other stuff out there too on the web, if you mess around with your search engines.
