living in Geneva

I will be working at CERN (a large physics lab) and living in Geneva for about 10 weeks this summer, and I'm interested in finding cheap housing (as well as any and all general advice). I'm a 20 year old student from the U.S., and I've looked into a few hostels and foyers (the local universities were somewhat helpful). Right now the best bet seems to be the Foyer George Williams (run by the local YMCA), but they have a rather involved application process, so I might get back their response and learn that they're booked.

Can anyone (locals especially) recommend a good place to live in Geneva or nearby on the French side?

Also, I'm traveling alone, so if anyone has any advice on meeting/speaking to people (my French is VERY limited), ideas for things to do in the city, or tips for good weekend excursions, please share those as well.

And of course, general advice is most welcome: Eating inexpensively? Appropriate Dress? Interesting stories about Geneva?

Thanks in advance.

Ursula, I've already pestered poor Ron with a private email and some personal questions :-)

I think I can help him, I know people working in CERN, but I need to know when he's coming and who he has already contacted.

He already knows the most important thing: you can drink the water in Geneva !

Florence: Maybe, Ron also likes a nice Kir once in a while! ;-)

My Husband and I visited Geneva last year and enjoyed our stay.
We stayed around the train station area at Hotel Termini international. Areas was ok however the road round that corner was a bit sleazy !! But very safe !

Best places to eat : we would a great chinese place opposite our hotel great food and dirt cheap - although it was always packed out - figures !!

There are pleny of McDonalds, pizza places inc pizza hut. There are plenty of kebab joints - to my husbands delight ! And we enjoyed a great meal at a Thai restaruant nearby i think called im-gens or something - not very expensive. Towards the lake the prices became higher !

Enjoy your stay - its a wonderful place !
