Lithuana - going to Kaunas

My husband is the son of Lithuanian immigrants and we were thinking of dodging over during a trip London this May for a few days to visit the "cousins" in Kaunas.

We are looking for suggestions on all topics. We also have some specific questions.

What airlines have good and inexpensive non-stop flights from London?

What are your thoughts on renting a car?

We'd prefer to stay in an apartment-type lodging rather than a hotel. Can we get a place for 4 or 5 days do you know? Website?

What would you put on your "must see" list for Lithuania?

Thanks much. Ellen

Trakai castle is about 20 miles from Vilnius. I would consider it a "must see."

Hi, Ellen! Have I got a trip report for you :-) Click here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34841274 for my experiences in Kaunas: I loved staying at www.nemunastour.com and highly recommend it for non-hotel style living.

I really enjoyed the Curonian Spit and the Hill of Crosses, as well as Grutas Park. Kaunas itself has some interesting sites but Vilnius is of course more a source of architectural gems, and Trakai Castle (out of Vilnius) is also a special site.

Enjoy...oh, and don't forget www.inyourpocket.com as a great resource.

By the way, I flew Ryanair, which was cheap...but, well, I had a 10 hour delay in Kaunas airport. (Nice little airport, but not for ten hours, trust me.) I believe Wizzair might also fly there if I remember correctly.

Happy trails!

WE spent 4 days there last summer when my son married a woman from Kaunas. We enjoyed the place much more than we thought we would. I wrote a realy, really long trip report on our trip to Lithuanis. Don't just limit yourself to Kaunas. There are many other interesting places to visit in the country. The one place we didn't have time to see was the ethnographic museum outside of Kaunas. So, we'll save that for another trip My trip report included the agency we got our rental from. I can give you some more feedback after you look ar their website.

Here's the link to my report.
