Lisbon place to stay central and affordable?
 

We're arriving in Lisbon and dropping off our rental car just before Easter. We hear it's a great city for a few days so we'll end our 3 week Portugal visit there before flying home. Looking for a place to stay three days that's central and interesting just to hang out rather than being near major attractions . The Alfama area looks interesting but maybe noisy and difficult to access for we older travellers. A hotel under $110 would be good with private bathroom and WiFi , close to transport and not too far out.
Leaving March 25 - Easter Friday - so hopefully that won't cause accom. or travel problems to get to airport.

It's very central, and has very good sound proofing. Breakfast has improved since I started staying there, and the dirt cheap Bom Jardim, with fabulous chicken, is just down the street.

But if I could afford it I'd stay here:

They do look nice, but now we are beginning to think a place with a kitchen might be a good alternative as we don't like to eat as late as it sounds most folk do there - and home-made breakfast is cheap and quick to get out and going early

Unlike Spain, it's not difficult to eat earlier in Portugal. (Earlier to me being 7:30 to 8:00, but I think you can eat earlier than that, too.)

If you or someone knows of a budget place with cooking facilities that could be good. We hear market shopping is good and we love doing our own cooking sometimes - good for the budget and the digestion!

With due respect to you, thursdays, as you might not be aware but you were a big help and I defer to your recommendations during our previous trips. You were reason why we originally booked our stay in Florescente last Nov. But it did not end well... as I posted sometime in Aug. last year, I placed a reservation guaranteed by my cc on their website but I never receive confirmation of reservation incl. pertinent information i.e., type of room, cancellation policy, etc. even after numerous emails/request for confirmation. Last one (Aug.) was to advise them that if I don't receive a confirmation in 48 hours, I will deemed our reservation cancelled. And, of course, I did not hear from them until this month when I noticed a charge from them against my cc which of course, I am contesting. Could be there was a management change? But, Bom Jardim is still very good... best, most tender, tastiest chicken I had at a very reasonable price! Btw, because of your nightmare stay at a hotel in Marrakesh, I made sure that I double checked all the hotels that we stayed in Morocco; thanks for the tip, thursdaysd.

@nina88 - very sorry to hear that. I last stayed at the Florescente in late 2014, and had no problems booking through the website. Have no idea whether it has changed hands. Glad to hear that Morocco went better!

Suggest you investigate the Hotel VIP Eden...fairpriced, clean, comfortable and central as can be, rooftop pool with 360-degree views, elevators, next door to a small breakfast cafe'(better and cheaper than the hotel).

On the other side, The Elevador Gloria taking you up to Bairro Alto. A few steps away from the venerable, historic but rather expensive Avenida Palace (appearing in one of my latest novels...with a story of it's major role in WW II espionage!)Stop in for a drink or dessert and imagine yourselves as a husband and wife spy team in 1940-45! (See pix above which may give you some ideas for your short stay). Enjoy!

Rossio Square is a block away, as VIP Eden is smack on Restauradores Square...Bom Jardim is simply a short walk across the square.

I spent a couple of nights at the Eden and was NOT impressed. I suspect some rooms are better than others.

Right, KW...we looked at two rooms before we chose a good one. Service was excellent and the rooms and corridors were well kept. What the hell, the rate was appealing anyway. We had a view over the square and tree-lined Avenida Libertad. Very quiet. Breakfast was way overpriced... thus we found the next door Taverna "Olympus" very adequate.

Hope you're well and escaping the storm. I have dear cousins who just moved to Leland NC (Wilmington)from DC.

Tx for checking. So far so good. We got mostly freezing rain, keeping my fingers crossed the power stays on. Expecting snow tomorrow, but not much. I think Wilmington missed it altogether, just wet rain, so that was a good move.

We loved As Janeles Verdes - not exactly central but lovely views from the roof, and easy to get to - great breakfasts and very helpful staff. enjoy your trip

Ditto 100% on the As Janelas Verdes hotel. Charming & a little off the beaten path; no kitchen facilities to my knowledge & possibly more $$ than the OP wants.

Guess "affordable " is subjective. $300 a night isn't that category for us . We can afford it in fact, but rarely enjoy the removal from the local ambience...
